“Every generation has its Idols...for some it were The Beatles...for the other ones it was Michael Jackson or Take That...12 year olds von today’s generation are adoring Tokio Hotel...World wide.At the moment, the 4 Magdeburg boys are bedazzling their French fans in Paris, in front of 17.000 people, they played all their hits. Let it be here, or in the USA, Italy or France, their amazed fans know their German lyrics by heart.The guys are very happy that this way, they can carry their mother tongue out in the world.

Bill: “We never came out and tried to say “Ok here we are, we want everyone to sing in German”, it just kinda came along and we have noticed that people are having no issues with actually learning the language itself, and we have the most utter respect for them, because we all know how hard it is to learn a language”.

Until now, Tokio Hotel has sold around 3.5 million CD’s and have won many awards for their work. Starting von the “BAMBI” or to the “COMET” or just recently “DIE GOLDENE KAMERA”, many big named awards are there. Even though they have all the fame, they are still always nervous to come out and be on the stage.

Bill: “Yeah, of course you are still nervous when you are on the stage. You get so nervous, it’s not even normal. Especially, like today, with so many people here, the excitement is even bigger. Even the night before you are like thinking about it, and can’t sleep at all...those are all the things that come along with it”.

Just recently, they had some more sleepless nights, but it was about another thing: Next to their music careers, the 4 boys had to get their secondary school diploma. And it felt like a stone in their stomachs...

Tom: “It was a total horror. It’s like even more stress on top of everything, because we are like always on the road, we only had like one week, where we tried really, really hard just to concentrate on school... which is hard ‘cuz then like the phone would ring and people are calling us... but somehow we actually managed to get it done. But like I said...a really stressful, annoying and shitty time for us”.

But that time is now over, and now the 4 Tokio Hotel boys can totally just concentrate on their music careers. Tonight, they play one more show in Paris, and then after comes Portugal, Spain, Italy, Sweden, and many, many more European countries...Bill, Georg, Tom and Gustav are very happy about that!

Tom: “When you are standing on this stage, and you are playing a song, and everyone sings along, and there is like 17.000 of them...and they are happy to see you and that you are there, that’s the moment when you realize why you chose to do this...”

Not many artists were successful to sing in German in other countries, but Tokio Hotel has made it. We shall see what they will surprise us with next!

A band from a town in East Germany become the biggest stars of the past 20 years in their native country, charting records at No. 1, playing to ten or 20 thousand each night and being feted with every German industry award. Before long, the four musicians are travelling farther afield, and demand is growing fast - not just from an increasingly manic fanbase, but from the mass media too. Much attention is focussed on the frontman and the guitarist - identical twin brothers with a potent 'fight for your dreams' philosophy. The former is a striking, androgynous-looking performer, pierced & tattooed, an artist effortlessly able to drive his followers into a frenzy, whilst the latter cuts a distinctive dash of his own. They record & release two full albums of memorable guitar-driven anthems, complete with German lyrics, and Tokio Fever rages out of control...'

The script would have to include the fact that two of the TH members were just 13 years old when they made their first record, and they are still only 17 today. So no-one would believe it. No way.

ACTUALLY, NOT only is the above synopsis free from artistic licence, but if anything it underplays the impact these spirited teens have made on a German market where 'Tokio Fever' is now an epidemic...

Since signing with Universal in May 2005, TH have sold approaching three million records & DVDs in Germany alone, making them the country's most successful band, with a host of domestic awards jostling for space in the collective cabinet (nine platinum/four gold, at last count, plus an additional four platinum awards for sales in Austria & Switzerland). And they played the most successful debut live tour EVER to grace German stages.

The two TH albums - 2005's 'Schrei' ('Scream') and follow-up 'Zimmer 483' ('Room 483'), recently released - have both topped the charts at home, spawning four No.1 singles, and in the case of the former, staying on those charts for 66 unbroken weeks. Meanwhile, the first leg of the European stadium tour in support of 'Zimmer...' (April 3rd - May 14th) will see the group playing in front of young crowds six to twenty thousand strong. All going mad. All of the time. Something underlined in the reddest possible ink by the 'Schrei-Live' DVD, issued in 2006, which has now sold approximately 100,000 copies in Germany, pushing total DVD sales for TH to the quarter million mark...

Put simply, it would be an act of rank foolishness to go toe-to-toe with these guys in terms of statues or stats, with existing records being rearranged as a matter of routine. They're the youngest band to reach the top of their charts at home, for example... and now the highest-placed German act ever in France, where 'Zimmer 483' (the meaning of the title is hidden somewhere in the album!) recently stormed the chart at No.2, turning gold week one.

With French national radio station NRJ reporting more text messages & phone calls for TH than for Madonna, and their supporters laying siege to any hotel they book into, it's clear that this audio/visual fan-driven phenomenon is not constrained by either language or location. France, Austria, Switzerland and most East-European countries are all now making their mark on the gold & platinum scale, paving the way for a co-ordinated leap into the wider overseas market, with the US & UK ridin' high on the 'to do' list.

Central to this, the key moments from both albums are being brought together on 'Scream' - a new 12-track package (set to appear on June 4th) that could already, and quite legitimately, be described as a 'Greatest Hits' release. Complete with specially revised artwork plus newly recorded English vocals (seven songs from the debut outing had to be re-worked three keys lower for Bill, since he was only 13 when he sung the original versions), it will serve as the ideal calling card for those markets yet to experience 'The Fever' at first-hand, with high-profile live & promotional activity due to take place in support.

And just to make the 'script' even more improbable, all of the above (and more!) has been achieved in less than two years - although the speed of this breakthrough should in no way imply either fast-tracking or favoritism. In the world of TH, dues have very much been paid...

BY VISITING the website of their hometown Magdeburg you can see who the town (population 230,000) considers its foremost sons & daughters. Top of the list is Otto von Guericke, inventor of the air pump, born there in 1602, but also on this roll of honour (and destined to knock Otto from his primary perch) are Tokio Hotel. It was in this vicinity, some 405 years later, that the Kaulitz brothers came into the world, Tom 10 minutes before Bill...

For their guitarist stepfather, encouraging the boys' musical instincts seemed the natural thing to do, and by the age of 12, a band had been formed. It was called Devilish, with Georg & Gustav - who had seen the twins play using keyboards rather than live bass & drums - coming on board to add sinew to the spine. Bound together by shared musical likes (and dislikes), the group launched itself onto the clubs & bars of Magdeburg, then booked time in a small budget studio to put the live set to tape. By the end of that session, however, it was obvious to all parties that lack of time, money & experience had taken its toll, leaving the sonics and the songs a little frayed around the edges.

In short, more work was required, and once that work was underway (in conjunction with the producer team: Dave Roth, Patrick Benzner, Peter Hoffmann & David Jost, who had previously worked for Mötley Crüe, Jewel, Faith Hill & Falco, amongst others - they even did remix work for The DOORS), a whole new level of composition was quick to emerge. Sturdy of hook, emotive of vocal and walking a confident middle path between pop sensibility and prime rock rebellion, it was at this point that the TH sound of today began to find its feet. Accessible? Absolutely. Modern? Most certainly. But at no point conceived to fall in line with fashion.

FOR BILL, Tom, Gustav & Georg, this learning curve is something that still gets discussed in (rare) quieter moments; their first time as members of an experienced/extended team, and their first chance to sit in a hi-tech control room, jet-fighter-cockpit-and- bridge-of-The-Enterprise all rolled into one. Out of these early sessions came a selection of songs powerful enough to pull in major industry interest (Universal offered their deal after another label had 'fumbled the ball'), and also to captivate the public in a way that seldom happens, with debut single/video 'Durch Den Monsun' ('Through The Monsoon') leading the charge in spectacular style...

A prime example of restrained drama and telling melody, '... Monsun' charted at No.1 in Germany on August 20th 2005, with Tokio Hotel now the name of the band; by the following week, the track had rocketed to No.1 in Austria as well... which at this point makes 'the script' impossible to put down!

Sure, the song was a hit, and a serious one, occupying the top spot in Germany for seven consecutive weeks and staying in the Top 100 for a further 16. More than that, however, it took a rather large flame to the TH fuse, connecting with receptive hearts & minds on a level that flagged up a healthy future for the group beyond this early assault. It was also, significantly, the 'tipping point' track in France, where radio reticence was finally overcome with an English language version (!)... and now it will be the launch song from the international 'Scream' album, supported by a new video filmed in Cape Town, South Africa with director Daniel Siegler.

FROM THE initial release of '... Monsun' onwards, the words 'Tokio Hotel' and 'major chart success' have never been out of the same sentence, with the next four singles all striking home: 'Schrei' (Top Five), 'Rette Mich' (No.1), 'Der Letzte Tag' (No.1) & 'Ubers Ende Der Welt' (No.1), the latter from 'Zimmer 483'. No great surprise then that the band have been consistently honoured at such high-profile events as the World Music Awards, the Eins Live Krone Awards, the European Borders Breaker Awards and the Echo Awards, where they recently premiered new single 'Spring Nicht' ('Don't Jump') before collecting the 'Best Video' award for 'Der Letzte Tag' ('The Final Day').

With 'Spring Nicht' (also from 'Zimmer...') due out shortly in Europe plus the international release for '... Monsoon' now set at May 7th, 'the script' continues to be a page-turner, with extra cast & crew added all of the time. What there's no need for, however, is a stylist, as right from the start the four - particularly, Bill & Tom - have chosen to explore their own ideas about image, giving an extra-wide berth to convention & conformity (the clip for 'Ubers Ende Der Welt' tackles this subject with non-political aplomb).

There is a story that, when very young, Bill & Tom would wear T-shirts bearing their names so as to stop people mixing them up, but there's no chance of such confusion occurring today...

On one side, there's Bill, almost an anime character come to life with his exotic appearance and shock of hair - a 'live for the moment' personality who basically 'invented' himself when he was six years old. He has since become the biggest and most passionate stage performer in the country.

Tom, on the other hand, favours a different, more urban look, though one that's just as defined - all in marked relief to his brother's tight-fit taste in fashion. Not unexpectedly, their musical leanings are individual too, with Tom's early regard for AC/DC & Aerosmith now giving way to artists such as German hip hop star Samy Deluxe, whereas Bill, if pressed, is more likely to talk about David Bowie or veteran German singer Nena, for whom he's long nursed an affection.

With so much media attention focussed on the pair (the circulation of German youth title Bravo has risen by 22 per cent in the wake of TH's booming popularity), it can sometimes be hard for decisions to be taken with a fully level head. In this respect, the 'two G's' - whose musical loves range from Fall Out Boy & Green Day (Georg) through to Metallica & Foo Fighters (Gustav) - are on hand to provide the more measured view, the calm at the eye of the storm. Actually, make that monsoon...

GIVE ALL of the above a stir, and the result is a young band who pride themselves on playing their instruments since they could walk (Gustav started on drums when he was four) putting on great live shows (they've recently taken delivery of a new all-moving stage-set) and having positive things to say to fans their own age. Yes, their demeanour and their dress have played a significant role in bringing them into the spotlight, and yes, their average age is only 18, but it would be foolish to attribute such dramatic (and fast-growing) success to pin-up power alone. No cheekbones are that sturdily chiselled.

THE LEADER OF THE GERMAN BAND HAS RECEIVED HIS DRIVER'S LICENSE AND HAS BOUGHT HIS FIRST CAR...

Bill Kaulitz, he's handsome, he sings well, he's stylish, he's rich, he is...
In short, he lacked nothing, but one thing to complete it all: a car. The problem is, while all the other members of Tokio Hotel have passed the eam, Bill missed his on the first try...

But after a few weeks of additional driving courses, Bill from Tokio Hotel has finally overcome it and got his driver's license two days ago, last Wednesday, on his second attempt.

Once the paper in his pocket, he we left there to choose the equipment of his dreams. Here, Bill opted for a German brand by offering himself a grey convertible BMW (see it here) Price of the jewel? Around 90,000 euros. This is the price he must pay to ventilate his hair with class...

Rumor has it Tokio Hotel will be visiting Mexico when they are in North America. The rumor says it will be a private concert for radio and music people. That’s all we know. Don’t go crazy yet. It’s ONLY a rumor.

For any of you who like to run outside and breathe your North American air simply because the band is on the same continent? Well, you can run outside now because rumor has it Tokio Hotel has landed and their takeover of the Americas is beginning.

On the 7th, next Wednesday, in Sayreville, New Jersey, Tokio Hotel's US Tour starts and will end sometime at the end of the month.
A total of 11 concerts in small enclosures, where we can check out the realistic prospect of the band in the US...a musically contradictory country, difficult to win, but essential in a takeoff on a global basis.

The importance of the mini-tour goes beyond what is strictly musical, so much, that the future and planning of future months for the band depends largely on the month of August, which causes us to compare the American cities as a final exam.

The trajectory of the Magdeburg boys could be considered meteoric. That is why, far from lifting the foot off the accelerator, it is precisely now that the Tokio Hotel universe has so much at stake, and will now step on the pedal.

If fans and the American press respond with the same predisposition that they did during TH's promotional tour for "Scream," the management will plan the World Tour's next studio album in many different ways, giving priority to a new market and drastically reducing the dates in Europe (!!!), replacing the flags in Champion League stadiums, accommodating the same number of fans, but fewer dates.

The USA tour plays a role and takes place in reduced enclosures or average-sized ones. We cannot overlook the radical change that this can make in the new continent. Obviously, we talk about the maximum degree which any band can aspire, but let us not forget the harshness that results for most European bands on their first American tour, where they spend a least a couple months and have been everyday in places where flags, cities, fans, food, hotels...virtually everything. The leader of a great and famous Swedish band in the 80s once said that the US was like working in an assembly line of Scania truck company, where employers are happy to be able to work, but then eventually got burned out because America's industrializes through art.

Today, having recognition in the US is like having Harry Potter's wand, and being able to see the rest of the planet's doors open automatically. The Japanese, Australian, and South American markets are waiting...

TRL Week Starts Tuesday:

According to the schedule on TRL’s website, there will be no show on Monday and Tokio Hotel on TRL week won’t start until Tuesday. This means only three days of Tokio Hotel, not four. Make sure to tune in on Thursday though, when they’ll perform live!

TRL Week-In-Review:

This was Monsoon’s first full week on MTV TRL’s countdown. They started off on Monday at #6 and jumped to #4 on Tuesday. On Wednesday they retained their #4 spot, but on Thrusday they dropped off the chart completey. This was very unexpected, but is a reminder to everyone to keep voting for Tokio Hotel week starting Tuesday. You can vote for Monsoon here.

MOD Week-In-Review:
Monsoon had a disappointing week on the MOD Daily 10. They started off on Monday at #4, dropped to #6 on Tuesday and then down to #8 on Wednesday. Thursday saw them drop another spot to #9 until they finally started to move up again on Friday to #8. We’ve really got to start voting again or next week we could see Monsoon fall off the Daily 10. Remember, you can vote on the Daily 10’s site as many times as you want. Vote HERE.

Hmm..we shall have to get this fixed, lets get voting everyone!!

TOKIO HOTEL GET NOMINATED!!...

Tokio Hotel has been nominated for Best Pop Video in the MTV VMAs, but not for the video we expected. Although the focus was to vote for Monsoon, somehow Ready, Set, Go! has been nominated instead. This is still great news, but it is also a bit confusing. To see al the nominees for best Pop Video, look here.

MTV Creeps Ever Closer To Staging A Live Tokio Hotel-Jonas Brothers Cage Match
Idolator is suggesting that we may see Tokio Hotel and the Jonas Brothers together on the VMAs. They say that MTV is looking to bring in a lot of viewers, and they know such a feature would do that.

Inexplicably enigmatic German outfit Tokio Hotel has apparently snagged the first Video Music Awards nomination of its career, with the band's clip for "Ready, Set, Go!" getting nominated in the Best Pop Video category. This victory-before-the-victory was no doubt assisted by the fact that Internet fan voting helped determine said division's picks, what with Tokio Hotel fans rivaling only Jonas Brothers diehards in the current pantheon of "bands who have crazed, computer-equipped teen girl squads as their fanbases." And hey, given that the Jonas Brothers have already been announced as a performer on the Sept. 7 broadcast, and that MTV—no stranger to the fans of those two bands waging war on behalf of their beloved musicians—wants the broadcast to make a Britney-sized ratings splash again this year, I suspect this is all going to lead up to some sort of wresting match. Censoring Vacation Pictures

I think we've heard about it before, but I think Tokio Hotel are really adament in keeping there private life..well Private!

Star Agora has posted an article about Bill and Tom’s vacation photos. They say that the boys may be seeking to censor the photos, because they don’t like their private life to be exploited.

Have the leaders of the group Tokio Hotel started a censorship operation to remove vacation photos? Tom and Bill Kaulitz were very sexy in swimwear! The fans would have TH easily imagined them on the beach, tanning in the sun, or by the pool of their luxurious palace of Maldives.

The German site Bild offered photos of Tom and Bill Kaulitz torso naked, smoking and drinking their cocktails. But now, no more of their private life! Obviously these unofficial photos were not in the interest of TH. The Kaulitz brothers are real stars, better than Britney Spears in Mexico (see NEWS).

Thus we would not see the Magdeburg twins in total relaxation mode. The private side of the young Kaulitz brothers was altogether removed! However, there is a Russian blog with fairly recent, and very sexy, photos of the twins at the beach.

But beware, there are other relatively recent photos of Tom and Bill in the Maldives. The photos date from this winter. This seems to be a habit for the singer and guitarist of Tokio Hotel to escape the German cold to get in this archipelago of islands like paradise in the Indian Ocean. The Maldives is hot, far away and expensive, which enables the two to relax in peace.

On these blog pictures we see Tom and Bill Kaulitz without make-up, stripped to the waist, but Bill is still wearing his nail polish. They bathe with smokes to thei mouthes, with the orange juice cocktail and ice Miko. We can easily distinguish the tattoos Bill has on his left arm: he tattooed his last name in nice letters… It is undoubtedly not to lose it!

Tom and Bill Kaulitz are two Robinson Crusoe on their island wilderness. Tom is much more relaxed than his brother. At 18, he is ready to crack all girls and women! And you, do you prefer Tom or Bill in a bathing suit?

During voting, Tokio Hotel and the Twilight Cast had far more votes than everyone else fighting for the top spot, but it seems as though the Twilight Cast won. With the list now released, Tokio Hotel took the second spot. Although they didn’t win, second place is still very good, seeing how much of a lead they had on the Jonas Brothers (third place) during voting.

You’ve heard the screams and witnessed the hysteria that comes in their wake, but just who are Tokio Hotel? It’s no doubt that this little German band has taken the world by storm, covering the music scene in an intoxicating monsoon of giant hair and moving lyrics. You’ve seen the videos and heard the songs, but just who is this quartet of youth and how did this hysteria come about?

Tokio Hotel is comprised of the Kaultiz twins; lead vocalist Bill and Guitarist Tom. The Band also contains drummer Gustav Schafer and Bass player Georg Listing. The Boys musical interests began when they were around seven years of age. Bill and Tom‘s musical interest was sparked by their step father who was a musician himself. The twins started out by playing local pubs in their hometown of Magdeburg, Germany. Bill would do vocals while attempting to play the keyboards and Tom would accompany on the guitar. Bill composed his first song at the age of nine. One night while playing a local club called Gröninger Bad, the twins caught the attention of two young musicians in the crowd. Georg Listing and Gustav Schafer, who knew each other from school, witnessed the twin’s musical abilities and knew they needed their help. “It was obvious that these two guys needed some help, so we talked to them after their gig” Laughs Georg in an interview with PopCultureMadness.com. Tom goes on to joke “Yeah, they actually begged us to join the band - that’s how we got together”.

The band began their early career under the name Devilish. The first gigs they undertook were for no more than five or six people. “Yeah, sometime we have ten or twelve people.“ Bill laughed in an early Devilish interview for a German TV program. Despite their lack luster start the boys soon caught the attention of the record labels in 2001 and began their marathon to fame. After securing their first record deal the boys felt a need for a name change and opted for Tokio Hotel. “After we signed our record deal we thought it was time for a new beginning - we were called Devilish before that. All of us really like big and modern cities. We all think Tokyo is one of the coolest places on earth - and we hope to get there someday soon, hopefully to perform” Tom explains to PopCultureMadness.com. Bill goes on to add, “Yes, and we were also looking for a symbol that would represent our lives from that point on. And because we were living in hotels a lot of the time, the name really seemed to fit”.

In 2003 Bill was a candidate in the first season of “Star Search” (category “Junior”). Bill performed The Whether Girl’s “It’s Raining Men.” But in the quarter-final he was defeated by Oliver Bruton. Bill did not let his “Star Search” experience get him down and in 2005 the band released their first German-language album, Schrei, as Tokio Hotel on Island Records. Schrei sold more than half a million copies worldwide. The album also provided them with four top five singles in Germany and Austria. Their fist album produced their first widely popular single “Monsoon” that has now become a staple in their line of success.
The release of their first album catapulted the boys into the hearts of every German girl who witnessed their image. This overnight success made it difficult for the boys to continue a normal routine, such as going to the store and attending school. The twins for example, where constantly causing massive hysteria at their high school. Very soon the boys were forced to give up on regular classes and finish their degrees online. Bill has been noted as saying that he hated everything to do with school. Don’t we all?

In 2007, the band released their second German album Zimmer 483. The new German album produced three top five singles in Germany. Also in 2007 the guys released their first English album Scream. Together both albums sold over one million copies world wide. Scream produced two singles that reached the top twenty in new territories such as Portugal, Spain and Italy. The new albums also helped the boys land their very first MTV European Music Award for Best InterAct. They also performed their newly translated version of “Monsoon” at the EMA’s. The performance was made especially memorable because of the monsoon produced upon the stage. During the last chorus of the song the stage was engulfed in a downpour drenching our German rockers. The song never waned a minute and resulted in one of the most spectacular performances of the entire night. Their first live album, Zimmer 483 - Live In Europe, was released near the end of 2007.

After their various European tours and domination of their home country, Tokio Hotel was read y to tackle North America. In 2008 the boys played several shows in Toronto, New York and L.A. Each gig turned up a multitude of new fans, surprising the band because their CD hadn’t even been released there yet. Before they could bask in their US debut and return for some more the band suffered a serious set back. Vocalist Bill Kaulitz lost his vocal abilities before several prominent European and US tour dates. At first it was thought his loss of voice was a simple matter of laryngitis. Upon further examination it was discovered Bill’s vocal chords contained a cyst that had been formed through over exertion of his voice. The cyst was removed successfully and after 10 days of silence and weeks of rehab Bill was back on tour once again. The band looks back on the ordeal as a scary time in their career but are glad Bill came through unaltered.

The dates were rescheduled and the band returned to the States for the second time. The guys were especially nervous about coming to the US. While there the boys would be undergoing their first ever completely English tour. They marked their first ever US live television debut on MTV’s TRL. They conducted the entire show in English periodically apologizing for their bad language skills. The boys did a wonderful job conversing with everyone, proving their English is definitely on par. While on the show they performed “Ready, Set, Go” to a hysterical audience and presented a lucky fan with a costume from the actual video shoot. The Boys will be returning to TRL for a whole week as guest hosts August 4th-9th 2008.

Most recently Tokio Hotel attended the 2008 Comet Awards in Germany where they picked up four Awards including the Super Comet Award. More exciting than the new awards was Bill’s unveiling of his brand new hair style. He temporarily ditched the famous Sonic the Hedge Hog main for a darker sleeker look. Don’t worry his hair may be darker but it still has the ability to defy all gravity.

So what’s next for Tokio Hotel? Only time can tell. The band is currently touring the European festival scene and will begin their US invasion in August. With the support of their many eager fans throughout the world there’s nothing these boys can’t do. Now it’s our turn to help them stay on top. Are you ready to “Scream” for Tokio Hotel?

Bogus Tokio Hotel star charged with Internet sex hoax

PERPIGNAN - A French youth has been charged with posing online as the star of teen rock band Tokio Hotel to trick young girls into sending him nude photos, police said Friday.

The 18-year-old from southwestern France signed up to a string of online chatrooms mascarading as Tokio Hotel singer and teen heartthrob Bill Kaulitz, striking up relations with young girls aged from 11 to 17.

He convinced several to send him nude photographs, some sexually explicit, which he went on to publish on the Internet.

He was arrested on Tuesday and is to stand trial in the southwestern city of Perpignan, police said.

The German pop group Tokio Hotel released their first album in May 2006 and quickly became a major success in Germany, France, Austria and Switzerland.

David, one of the producers of the band has given an interview to Yam about his definitions of success, how he feels about the band’s success, what makes a star and MORE! Thank you to Poppy at the forum for the translation from the German!

Talent, hart work or luck – what does it take to become really successful? Tokio-Hotel-Producer David Jost has the answer!

He is producer, songwriter and manager of Tokio Hotel. David Jost discovered the band from Magdeburg, built them up and led them to international success. The creative Hamburger is a workaholic always on a tight schedule. Nevertheless the 35-year-old found time for an exclusive yam!-interview and revealed what it takes to be successful as a star over the long run and why will can be more important than talent …

What does it take to become a star?
DAVID: Potential! Most of all a person has to have emotional potential and also enormous will power. If an artist has to offer a lot of both it is very likely that he will succeed.

Does one also succeed having only one of those two?
DAVID: Yes, if this one is highly developed. If one has only talent but not will power he needs to be lucky and find the right people to push him to success. It also works the other way round. Someone with moderate talent but enournous will power and intelligence can be successful as well.

Any examples for that?
DAVID: Madonna! She is not really an extraordinary singer, but she is intelligent. For over 20 years now, she has been one of the top artists worldwide. This is not luck, nobody can be lucky for such a long period. She does not leave anything to chance. Although she performs on stage, she is one of the big players in the music business, one of those people who pull the strings.

What else does it take to become successful and to stay it?
DAVID: One attribute which is also closely connected to willl power is the readiness to make sacrifices to reach one’s goals. For big and long-term success you almost always have to make sacrifices. This does not only apply for the music business. One has to be very lucky and talented to be successful without sacrifieces.

How do you spot a talent?
DAVID: There is no overall rule to this. Most of the time you can feel talent. I generally trust my gut instinct.

And what did your gut feeling tell you, when you saw Tokio Hotel for the first time?
DAVID: I totally went nuts (laughs). It hit me unexpected. At that time I was willing to do anything but work exclusively with one single band. But all my other plans were forgotten when I heard and saw the boys for the first time. Bill was 13 and showed me and my partners the Band-demos, which they had recorded in their tiny studio in Magdeburg. After the boys left I could not stop screaming „Yes“ and „strike“ (grins)

Did you already know, that TH would be internationally successful?
DAVID: No, of course not. I was 100 percent sure, that they would be mega-successful in Germany. I bet the whole music business everything on that. But it would have been very arrogant to assume that there was such an international hype.

What is Tokio Hotel’s recipe for success?
DAVID: The whole music business is full of artists who only succeed because somebody constantly tells them what to do and how to avoid mistakes. One of the reasons why TH are so successful is that they are exactly the contrary.

In what way?
DAVID: To tell Bill what to do against his will – which would be impossible by the way – would make him lose large parts of himself. Bill has to be totally convinced of what he does – to be able to be as good as he can be. Already at very young age he knew exactly what he wants, and even more what he does not want. People can feel this. Bill comprises very large emotional extremes. You rarely find a frontman like this in Germany. The star potential of the band is huge. Even if I had no brain, it would have been impossible to blow it (laughs)

Songwriter or Manager – which is more fun?
DAVID: Writing songs is of course more fun. But managing is also a creative and diverse job. I am very lucky that I am able to work for a band I believe in and who blows my mind every day anew. I could not do the job without this.

Are you and Tokio Hotel already working on the third album?
DAVID: We already begun with the songwriting. Bill is very creative at the moment and constantly comes up with new song ideas.

What is the best song that you ever wrote?
DAVID: I have not written that one yet. My best song is still to come (laughs)!

Exclusive: The last show of the year

After two awesome concert in Holland this year it is becoming quiet around Bill, Tom, Georg and Gustav. What will the boys be doing?

The photos you see here are made on 13 July in Belgium. There Tokio Hotel performed at the festival Werchter Boutique. We didn’t want to keep these from you, because it was Tokio Hotel’s last show from there European open air tour en with that also the last show they did this year in Europe.

Off course the boys won’t be twisting there thumbs the rest of 2008 either, they keep being busy. Bill and his boys are leaving in the beginning of Augustus to the United States to give live shows there the rest of the month and with that build a name for themselves in America. Because also America is becoming more and more TH-“minded”.
In May Time Square was already decorated with huge images of Bill, Tom, Georg and Gustav that were hanging in the outside of the MTV-studio’s there. There single and album Scream are released there and the fans response is very enthusiastic.

Gone forever?
You can’t off course blame Tokio Hotel for trying to break through in the States; that’s the biggest dream from about any artist. But that doesn’t mean that they are gone forever now. Are you crazy! There are already plans for a new album that will be released in Germany, our little Netherlands and other parts of Europe. That will be the third Tokio Hotel album. Rumours say it will be a German record again. When it will be released isn’t clear yet, but it will probably be somewhere in 2009.

Bill has already started with writing new songs. Everywhere he goes he is writing lyrics. He prefers his laptop but if he doesn’t have it with him he quickly writes something on a coaster or saves it in his phone. Earlier this year the singer has been through some rough times, with problems with his voice and even surgery on his vocal cords. Bill is getting a lot of inspiration out of this difficult time.

Are you Tokio Hotel fan, then you will have to be patient until something new from your german heroes is released. But the good news is: they are working on it!

The gender-bending emo-pop rockers are headed up by eighteen-year-old German twins Bill and Tom Kaulitz, whose looks are identical but whose styles couldn’t be more different. “We hate people telling us to wear this and that,” says guitarist Tom, who favors dreads, baggy jeans, and a carefully skewed baseball cap. “Sometimes at a photo shoot they try to style this hair,” singer Bill says, pointing to his hedgehog-like coiffure, “but no one knows how.” His secret? “Hair spray. A lot.” Between the hair and emotive vocals–not to mention the piercings, tattoos, and rock-chic clothes–it’s easy to see how Bill has become the object of many a teenage crush. And despite their varied senses of style, the Kaulitzes say their twin telepathy provides a shared vision of their goals for the future. “Be successful in America!” Tom says. In a recent interview with Vi Unge, a Danish youth magazine, Tokio Hotel reveals they will be coming back to Denmark sometime soon! After canceling their concert earlier this year and not being able to reschedule it this summer, they are hoping to go there as soon as possible.

In the spring you had to cancel a lot of concerts, because Bill had to be operated for a cyst on the vocal chords. Now you are back on the track. How does it feel to be back?
Bill: It is SO great to be back on stage again. I was really terrified under the whole process. Its obvious, that you get worried and thinks “What if my voice will be ruined?”, or “What if I dont sound like before”. Luckily I had a quick recover. First time I was on the stage after my surgery, it was really awesome, and I really enjoy the concerts we are playing at the moment.

What did Bills illness meant for the band?
Georg: It was a situation, where the power was out of our hands. The only thing we could do, was wish him well, and then just wait.
Tom: It took some time, before we actually realised we had to cancel the rest of our tour. In the beginning, when Bill went to Germany to get checked, the rest of us kept travelling from town to town, because all along we hoped he would come back.
Bill: I actually think the whole experience have brought us closer together.

Were you afraid it was over for Tokio Hotel?
Tom: Of course we thought about it. Especially in the beginning, were we didnt know what was wrong. But after some time, we started to think about the future, and that Bill would come back at some point. The worst we could imagine, was that I had to take over for Bill. Haha

You are currently breaking through in USA. Why is that so important for you?
Tom: To go to USA and try our luck there, is really amazing - especially for a German band. It’s really rare that happen. So of course we will take the chance when it comes, and see if we can make it over there. But its really not like we have a masterplan, on which countries we want to do make it in. It’s usually our fans, that discovers us online, and when we see there’s a lot that likes us, we go there. That’s how it works for us.

What is the craziest thing you have experienced in USA so far?
Bill: There’s so many things, it’s hard to choose. But recently, we experienced something pretty wild in L.A. We were sitting in the backstage-room after our concert, when all of the sudden, we hear a strange sound. Then we discovered it was a girl, trying to crawl through the window, on the second floor! Unfortunately, she got stuck, and then she even lost her camera. Pretty crazy.

Some of your Danish fans, feel a little disappointed over the cancelled concerts in Denmark, and that you havnt rescheduled. What would you like to say to them?
Bill: We really want to say - particularly me - that we are really, really sorry we had to cancel. We really couldnt do anything else in that situation. Unfortunately, we havn’t been able to find new dates, but we promise we havn’t forgotten about them, and that we will try to come and play as soon as possible.

Tokio Hotel Talks

Since releasing their first English album, ‘Scream’, German band Tokio Hotel has been taking North America by storm. We caught up with the guys recent; to talk music, touring and more!

How did you guys get started as a group?
Bill: We played in a lot of nightclubs and at weddings and we met Georg and Gustav in the audience. I think there were five people and two of them were Georg and Gustav… They came and asked if they could play in our band. We went to the rehearsal room and tried, and it was the beginning of Devilish. That was our fifth band name.

Is there a meaning behind your current band name?
B: We are all city people, so we came up with “Tokio”. We’ve never been there… It’s like a dream to play a concert in Tokyo. Then we said okay we need a symbol… and it was always a dream to travel the world and sleep in hotels, so we said let’s take “Hotel”.

‘Scream’ is your first album recorded in English. Was it hard to record a crossover album?
B: For me, it was really a challenge because… we just speak some words and we learned English in school, and I always sung in German. We said, okay we really want [it] so everyone can understand our lyrics. And the studio takes some time because I’m such a perfectionist and I really wanted it to sound natural, not like a German who tried to sing in English.

What do you like and dislike about touring?
B: Being on a promotional tour… it’s a lot of interviews and TV shows. That’s also okay, but playing live is just… yeah, more fun. The negative side of being on tour is you have not that much time for girls!

What has been your favourite stop since touring?
B: Hard to say… but I think I really love the big cities, so I really love Paris and Moscow. No, I think there are so many nice places in Europe. But, I also love New York, and I love Toronto. It’s a nice city.

Have you had any embarrassing moments while performing?
B: Georg always has embarrassing moments! No, I think yeah, there are some moments… I pushed my mike into my mouth… Gustav fell down from his chair. We were on the catwalk; it was in Russia, and we just jumped on the catwalk, and the whole catwalk jumped with us. It was like moving all around… It was like surfing.

What do you do in your spare time?
B: Most of the time, we sleep! I think we are the tiredest band in the world. On the tour bus, we have a lot of DVDs; I think two hundred DVDs and movies. Most of the time, not really interesting things. Just the opposite of our Tokio Hotel life.

Why the name Tokio Hotel?
Bill Kaulitz: It was just because we researched a name which is very close to us, so we are all city people, we love big cities, and we came from a really small, ugly town in Germany and it is really horrible and we always hated our village, and we wanted to stay in big cities. That was always our big dream. And Tokio sounds good, it is just a nice sound. And then we said, okay, Tokio. Everything we heard about it was, “Yeah, it is a huge city, it is just crazy there,” and we really wanted to go there…

So, you’ve never actually been there?
Bill: No, no.

Do you hope to get to Tokyo one day?
Bill: Yeah! Yeah, hopefully this year, but let’s see.
Tom Kaulitz: Maybe to play a concert.
Georg Listing: Tokyo Dome sounds good! There are some fan pages and stuff from Japan, and let’s see if we have the time this year or next year to go there.

Your song “Don’t Jump” – is there, a personal message in it?
Bill: Yeah, I think we talked about this, about suicide, because it is a song from our second German record, and the second German record was inspired by our fans and a lot of stories we hear. We get so many letters and stories from our fans that, yeah-
Tom: And we know some things from personal experiences, and it is a big topic, and you know we recognize it with the fan letters-
Bill: And you know everyone has a situation in their life where they are sure, you know, “Oh, I am so sad, I am so…” I don’t know, everyone has a worst part in their life and [we] said okay, let’s write a song about it and that it is never a way… to jump.

So you each had to tell me one of your musical influences, German or not…
Bill: For me the first touch with music, the first touch would be Nena. When I was six years old I saw her on television. Now I listen to Coldplay and Keen and Green Day.
Tom: And you know, I never had, you know, role models and stuff, but Aerosmith was always a big band when I was a child. A real child. I know I am eighteen now, but a real child. Yeah, Aerosmith.
Georg: For me, I also did not have a role model., I did not want to sound like this and this person. But I love Oasis. And with oasis I really started to listen to music.
Gustav Schäfer: I grew up with Eric Clapton and the old rock stars but now I listen to Metallica, to the harder stuff.

These acts put the toot in teutonic – but what do Tokio Hotel think of Germany’s other famous exports?

Now I would just like to get your honest opinion on some of your fellow German rockers. First, Kraftwerk…
Bill: Kraftwerk? Oh… Kraftwerk. I am not really into this music. [Murmurs of agreement from the group.] I don’t know so much about it.

Bill: I think she is really cool. I met her once, I don’t know, sometime in Germany, and she is really nice.

Tom: I think that [they are[ great. They had a lot of success over here, playing big arenas and big venues and I think it is great. It is not really, you know, my favourite music. I like, you know, I like what they are doing in terms of having success. It’s good.

Bill: Lots of fans have written to us saying that some of our songs help them in certain situations, and to deal with them that they feel better afterwards. I know so myself, and I think that every one of us listens to a lot of music at the moment and that music can help and support quite a lot in certain situations, and we of course want to as well. And it we’re happy to know that when we make songs that people feel better and understood afterward.

I don’t think very much of [indiscriminate]. I think it’s better for people to find themselves like how it was by us, and those that find themselves would be an optimal opportunity. But yeah, I’m not really the type for that.

Tom: It’s good that if you have a band and that you know each other for so long, it’s good to have one another to help and hold on to so that you don’t go walking around through life in a pink bubble and to keep you down on the ground of reality.

Tokio Hotel craziness in Europe has eventually arrived the other side of the Ocean. We talked to Bill & Tom twins who rocked the USA with Scream (album) about fame and dreams.. [interviewed by Nicole Freshee]

On a Saturday morning In New Jersey, a hundred of guys wearing raincoats don't ignore the rain and mud, and they are sitting at the car park of Meadowlands. Crowded which doesn't care the danger of crushing, is trying to announce their voice to Tokio Hotel and a poor girl is laying herself out: “Bill, I wanna make your hair!" Bill Kaulitz is the soloist,18 year-old, of the German band Tokio Hotel. While screaming is keeping on, guitarist Tom (Bills twin) who has dreadlocks is starting by playing Ready Set go and the concert is starting ..

Girls are keeping on screaming but Bill doesn’t seem like he cares. If he would try to answer the girls like her, then his hair like hedgehog wouldn’t be important that much, right ? So that he is turning right by shaking his hips, holding his biff up and starting to sing!

Tokio Hotels album called Scream was published on may 6th in America and this German emo band has been the favorite of MTV since that day. They give full house concerts in NY and LA.
“When we played at Irving Plaza in NY in February, everybody sang our songs, even German ones too!” says Bill. “We are used to giving concerts in Europe but attention in America makes us surprised!”

A few years ago, Bill and Tom , were playing to only a few people in Madgeburg. “Every weekend, we were playing to 15 people at the same club.” Says Tom who started to play guitar when he was 7. And Bill says that he decided to become a star at this time too. “On TV, I came across a Nena concert, she was singing “99 red balloons”. And i said ‘I wanna sing on the stage too!!’ " Tokio Hotel is completely founded with Gustav (drum) and Georg (bass) in 2001. “We thought, someone must help this band” says Listing by laughing.

Scream is the first English album of Tokio Hotel which consists of the English versions of German songs in German albums. “We have correlated with every song. ” says Bill who was affected for his new style by wearing a vampire costume on Halloween . “In the fact, Ready, Set, Go! tells our stories. Well, we say ‘Follow your dreams and don't be afraid to start a new life.' "

Like a real fan.

This is how we lived TH concerts. The first time is always special, and this one was magical. Bill, Tom, Georg and Gustav came to Spain and they did not disappoint.

Our stomachs flipped with excitement when we arrived to one of the most waited concerts. The ‘Go TH’ screams filled our ears and finally an intense night began..

They jumped on stage with an energy that put across their excitement. While they chained up songs, winks and special effects our legs did not stop. We could not stop jumping and Bill asked us to keep doing it!

When the Scream! moment began our throats were already sore but that is exactly what we did: scream. But the night had just began. “Are you okay?” asked a smiling Bill.

We kept rocking. We went crazy with Don’t Jump and Ready, Set, Go! and Reden made us shiver “Dedicated to my brother” said Bill.

The night was ending but there was a hit left: Monsoon. He sounded tired so we helped him with the chorus. Few tracks after, Rescue Me became the last song.

Before leaving Bill threw his towel towards the crowd, Tom and Georg theirs picks and Gustav his drumsticks. Then everybody clapped while recording the moment in our minds.

We finally saw them and with the amazing greets they received, they will surely come back soon!

Black-clothed, wearing dark glasses and giving us a smiling “hello”. This is how the Germans who rocked Spain in an unforgetable weekend appeared. Since then, 15 minutes with them…

Willkommen!! Nice to see you here in Spain again..
Bill: Same here! Fans over here are marvelous. Besides, we are told we have a lot of success here, so we are very happy.

Let’s go through it slowly. How was your staying in Barcelona?
B: It was a very beautiful performance. People were queuing for days, which dazzled us.

Sure! We were waiting for a long time, and since Madrid…
B: Yeah…we felt sorry for letting you down, but it was something unstoppable.

Don’t worry, we understand it! Are you recovered at all?
B: Yes, I finally can say it’s like always! It was a bad moment in our career. Days before stopping I was really harmed. Besides, it’s frightening when someone is raking through your vocal chords. Now we’re going to rock!

Yeah…you’re working a lot!
B: Hahahaha, we’re workaholics. We’ve been three years working without a break. We only have two holiday weeks in a year, but that’s what we wanted.

Don’t you prefer tranquility?
Tom: We are the ones writing the agenda. Of course, sometimes we are exhausted, for instance when we travel to three different cities within 24 hours!

It was this way: Friday 27th Barcelona, Saturday 28th Madrid…
B: And Sunday in Lisbon! But performing in Rock in Rio is amazing.

Sunday 19th? Did you miss the match between Germany and Spain? Germans were in a bad way after the match!
Gustav: Yeah..to be honest, I bid for a 3-2 winning Germany, of course.

You don’t have the Eurocopa, but you have money, success, girls…
B: There’s something of them lacking! Hahaha. The four of us are still single! We’re always thinking about our dreams and success hooks. It’s like a drug, you always want more: more glory, more concerts…

So singles, ah? It was said over here that Bill was going out with the majorcan Monica Sanz.
B: Hahaha! That’s not true, I’ve been single for three years, so…

Do you think fans could disappear?
B: Of course! But we know what is living without it. That’s why we appreciate it so much and we hope it to go ahead! Worst days may come, but fans are always a good incentive to go on…

This German band is all the hype in Europe and its four members have already started breaking hearts in our country. Are you ready to fall in love with them? You’ll surely do- By Diana Matozo

The leaders of Tokio Hotel are twin brothers Bill (lead singer) and Tom (guitar) Kaulitz. Despite the fact that they are identical twins, they have very different and distinctive personalities. They talked to our magazine (TU) about their music and they also shared some secrets of their love life with us. Find out everything about it!

TU: How do you feel now that your music is known in our country?
Tom: Once we dreamt about international success but we never really thought that it would happen. People in our country know about us but crossing borders is not only amazing, it’s also weird! We’ve never been in Mexico but our music is being played there…it’s a great satisfaction. We would love to visit your country.

TU: Do you have girlfriends? How’s your ideal girl?
Tom: I don’t have a girlfriend and I can’t really say that I have an ‘ideal’ girl. I can’t say that I prefer blond girls over brunettes or redheads, all I can say is that there are a lot of beautiful girls everywhere.

TU: Is dating easier when you’re in this career?
Tom: Of course music helps. In school, it’s the kids that are musicians the ones that tend to be very popular and have great success! That’s why I decided early on that I’d play guitar (laughs). No, honestly, I have never had ‘girl trouble’ and I have never used my fame to get with a girl.
Bill: In my case, music has definitely helped, I had my first girlfriend when I started singing but in this business, there’s little time for a serious relationship.

TU: Who’s your favorite (female) singer or actress?
Tom: I love Jessica Alba, she’s my favorite!
Bill: For me, it has to be Nena, the German singer, I was very influenced by her. I saw one of her concerts on TV and it was a moment that left a mark on me. I was very young and right after that, I started writing my own songs. It was clear to me that I had to be on a stage one day.

TU: Being twins, have you ever tried making a move on the same girl?
Tom: I had a girlfriend and when we broke up, I tried to talk her into giving my brother his first kiss. I wanted him to live that experience because (until then) Bill had never had a girlfriend. It was a way of showing how much I cared.

TU: Is there a message behind your look?
Tom: We have never wanted to create a fake image. This is part of our personality, this is what we feel, this is who we are. If you see pictures of us before being a band, you would see that the change hasn’t really been a drastic one.

TU: Would you get a girlfriend’s name tattooed?
Tom: If the relationship isn’t serious, I don’t think I would, I don’t think it’s worth it (laughs); if it were something a little more serious…I don’t think I’d do it either! I am not a big fan of tattoos.
Bill: I love tattoos! And if I were really in love, why not? I think I would do it.

TU: Are you guys faithful (when in a relationship)?
Tom: When you are in love, it’s important to be faithful and feel that the other person is being faithful too, it’s basic.
Bill: For me, this is something fundamental. Besides, if I am in love, I don’t really feel like accepting any other ‘offers’. With me, you don’t have to worry about cheating, I believe in being faithful and that’s what I practice but… I haven’t really been with a girl for quite some time now.

TU: How do you feel about your fans getting so crazy sometimes?
Bill: We’re really proud of the fans that we have, they support us so much, they are always waiting for our concerts, they sing our songs, they have an amazing level of energy and that’s contagious. They make us feel the need to continue doing what we are doing.

US Poster Competition!

Tokio Hotel’s Official US Site unveiled a new contest earlier today asking fans to print their tour poster, put it up in their communities, take pictures with it and email your favorite three to them. A new winner will be chosen every Monday in August. The winners will get two tickets to any US concert along with Meet & Greet passes.

Quotidiano.net has posted an article about Tokio Hotel’s concert at Parco Novi Sad in Modena. They say fans lined up days before in the heat and many ended up fainting or getting sick.

Night, morning, evening, night and again … Well, now for hours, the chronicle of a truly incredible Friday for Modena. The notes of four young stars.

Modena, July 12, 2008. They say that the female is the weaker sex. But when the stakes are high, even the teenage girls pull off a fighting spirit that not you expect. I arrived in twenty thousand (17 thousand tickets sold, more fathers, mothers and various friends …) for the Tokio Hotel concert at Parco Novi Sad. They braved the burning sun, the crowd remained to wait at Parco Novi Sad day and night. And in the end have realized their dream of teenagers. We among them, without disturbing too. In the morning we find them still there, with their faces a little ‘tense, “she” wear, but in fibrillation. “They said that the gates will open at 5:00PM - relate -. But where are they? “.

A few hours later, the delirium. Parents can not do more to see their girls just faint under the sun, and begin to put pressure, demanding loudly that the gates are open. 	Celebration of full moon Amongst Thailand-fans and backpack tourists it’s a legend: “Full Moon Parties” that will be celebrated to each full moon night with light balloons and psychedelic music on the beach of Haad Ron on the island of Koh Pha-Ngan. Up to 10 000 people come to then mass-dance together to the sound of the sea. We have water and full moon in Hamburg too, thought Tung Truong, the manager of the “Indochine”, and Dojan Jung of Young Creatives, which brought the party to the Elbe. Only 500 celebration jolly people could fit into the “Indochine”, but had to wait in a long line first, but it didn’t ruin the mood at all. For those who don't know you yet, how did you four meet?

Tom: Bill and I started making music when we were 7. We always preferred that to video games! We dedicated all our free time, evenings, weekends to it. Bill played synthesized because there was no one else to play the drums and bass. I met Gustav while we were at the Academy (music academy?), and we became friends then.
Gustav: And then one day, I went along to one of their gigs. When I saw Bill on stage trying to play synthesized, I told myself that really had to change. (laughs) So we started discussing it and I proposed to play with them. It was then that we started the band.

What would you like to tell those who call you just a well-marketed product?

Bill: Oh my god! In order to say such silliness, those people must be really frustrated. But anyhow, that's the usual thing you hear in the music business. Especially in Germany. These last few years, like in England in the 90s, there were lots of boys and girl bands. There were even TV shows, which had the goal of finding THE next band. So that makes it really hard to make a real formation without making it seem like a TV reality show. Today, it's hard to convince people that we're a real band, that no one told us to be friends with Gustav and Georg. Anyhow, no one would believe us. Consequently, we do our own thing without worrying about those rumors. Music is emotion; if you are just a puppet how can you put your heart into what you do? On my part, I put my heart into it all, so it annoys me when people think what I do is plastic. But there are times when you need to distance yourself from those rumors, otherwise you'll get eaten alive.

What relationship do you have with your fans?

Tom: Whenever we can, we talk to them, sign autographs...that's the least we can do, because wherever we go, they're there! Sometimes they wait for hours or spend the night on the streets. Whether it's cold, raining, snowing, they're there. And they offer us gifts in which they put their hearts and souls. So giving them a bit of our time, it's the least we can do to show them how much they mean to us. We want to live up to their love for us.

What's the most unbelievable gift a fan has offered you?

Bill: That's a hard question because we receive tons and tons of gifts. We are very touched by our fans' letters. Some are very long. There was one who made a 14 kilometer letter! That's almost a book of 1000 A4 pages!

Georg: Otherwise we got a car, a Mini Cooper with picture of us and our name all over. But it's hard to chose one gift in particular, because they all mean something to us.

Do you take time to go on forums and your MySpace page?

Bill: We have to be careful, because on forums, there are lots of people who pretend to be us, who chat with our fans and don't give a damn about them. If we're ever on Internet, it's always a group thing and it's announced officially. Other than that, we spend lots of times on blogs dedicated to us or on our MySpace, because their opinions interest us a lot.

The girls are crazy over you, but what's your type of girl?

Tom: That's a hard question, because I don't have one precise type of girl in my head. There just has to be a good feeling present from the beginning, a connection which allows the relationship to start naturally. She can be blonde, or have brown or red hair...it doesn't matter. But with the lives we lead, we don't have the time for those love relationships. At the same time, being faithful and engaged doesn't interest me...I like to take advantage and have fun. I was crazy over tons of girls. Too many girls. (laughs) I really think that it's possible to fall in love a few times in your life, and thankfully several people are made for you.

Georg: Concerning me, I would like to meet a girl who looks like Angelina Jolie, the Olsen twins, and Eva Longoria.

Gustav: We'll fight over the same girl, then, Georg. (laughs)

Bill: I'd like the girl to have a cool look, that she has clean nails and nice skin. And she must be positive and funny. One-night-stands don't turn me on. I really believe in true love, love that you can only find once in your life...if you're lucky enough. Because I think that lots of people will never find it, which is rather sad...I've known girls, I've already fallen in love. I know what it's like to have a crush on someone, butterflies in the stomach, but I haven't found Love, with a big "L."

Bill, you have a particular look. Have you always liked to make yourself up and do your nails?

Bill: I've been doing that since a very long time. Gustav and Georg never knew me otherwise. I started to get a taste for makeup when I participated in a Halloween party, several years ago. I was disguised as a vampire. Since then, I've kept the look. It's part of my personality.

How long does it take you every morning to make yourself nice?

Bill: Not very long. 40 minutes in all.

Do you have a ritual before going up on stage?

Bill: Well it's not really a ritual. Gustav likes to be alone, he concentrates and listens to music. But Georg, Tom, and I, we like to hang out together before the show starts and be stressed out together. We lock ourselves in a room for half an hour and no one's allowed to come in. Not even our manager! We imagine the worst-case scenarios, we laugh and it relaxes us.

And when you're not on stage, what do you do with your time?

Georg: We play ping-pong and kicker!

Tom: And when we're not touring, we like to sleep very late! Except for Gustav, who's an early-riser. But Bill, Georg, and I like to sleep, eat, watch TV and sleep. And when we can really allow ourselves a break, we like to travel for the holidays.

And what's your ideal destination?

Tom: All we can tell you is that we like little isolated islands, very, very, very far from here. (laughs)

Because of the circumstances, you spend a lot time together. Do you have friendships outside the band?

Tom: Yes, of course! It's important for us to be able to talk about something other than Tokio Hotel. But seeing that we share the same friends, we are almost always together. (laughs) And then we go on holidays together. So, yes, Tokio Hotel is our most beautiful story of friendship!

And you never hit each other?

Tom: Sometimes we really feel like it. Especially when Georg decides to take off his shoes. (laughs) But our friendship is stronger than our disputes!

Even if you're adulated by your fans, is there something about yourselves that you don't like?

Bill: (laughs) We haven't changed, we stay the same. We have the same defaults as before. And we have the same relationship together as we had before meeting success. So although it's nuts that we're 18 and there's so many girls crazy over us, there are always things that I don't like about myself. I don't walk around on the streets telling myself that I'm the best guy on earth. Tom, yes, sometimes. (laughs)

Tom: There's always things about ourselves that displease us. But it's normal: when you're 18, you're searching yourself. And for our age, we have lots of confidence in ourselves. When I say I'm the best, I don't take myself seriously, I'm fooling around!

What souvenirs do you have of your childhood? How would you describe yourself in that period?

Bill: We've always had confidence in ourselves and our future. We have strong characters. We started making music really early, because we realized at an early age what was good for ourselves. It wasn't always easy to live. At school, we didn't want to be molded, and that caused clashes among us, our professors, and other students. But other than hating high school, we had a good laugh.

Tom: I'm still a kid. I still have the kid that I was, in me. (laughs) He guides me every day.

Bill: But contrary to what our fans may think, we're far from being perfect. We're very thankful for our success, but we don't want to be examples for others!

A bit about the twin's early history for those who don't know yet:
Born in Leipzig, Germany to Simone and Jörg Kaulitz, Tom was born 10 minutes before his brother Bill Kaulitz which makes Bill the younger brother. They were very hard to tell apart when they were younger so they had to wear t-shirts with their names written on it. Simone Kaulitz divorced Jörg when the twins were 7 seven years old and remarried Gordon Trümper which is where many think that the boys get his surname Trümper, but it is rumors. They are only called Kaulitz. Their stepfather, Gordon Trümper, had a major musical influence on the boys since he was in a band of his own at the time. This caused Bill to start writing his own songs and Tom to play an instrument of his choice. Over the years, the twins both dressed in skirt-suits until they reached their preteen years in which they started to develop their own sense of style and personality. During the years they were in school, they would always pull pranks on their teachers which led to their separation in the seventh grade.

Growing in popularity, German rock band Tokio Hotel is new to North American fans but all the rage back home.

So when the foursome decided to break into the difficult North American market with its English debut album Scream, the group translated and then performed all of its German songs in English, something that took some time but was worth the work.

"The biggest challenge was to sing for the first time in English because as you can tell my English is not so good," singer Bill Kaulitz says inside a Toronto restaurant. "This is really the first trip that we've spoken English in interviews because we just know some words."

Tokio Hotel, playing the Sound Academy tonight, says translating each song "word by word" was trying.

"I'm a perfectionist, I really wanted to sound natural like I was a native speaker," he says. "That was really, really hard but I hope the fans like it."

"And then they (the words) have to rhyme and still have the same meaning," twin brother and guitarist Tom Kaulitz adds. "We wanted everyone to have a chance to understand what we are saying which was really important."

The band, rounded out by drummer Gustav Schafer and bassist Georg Listing, has made a lot of inroads in a short period of time with singles such as Monsoon and Don't Jump, which deals with suicide, a topic mentioned in some of the fan letters the band received from teens.

But both brothers say the single Ready Set Go! describes how the band members, who got together in 2001, found success at the mere age of 15.

"It was our first single in Germany and it was during our vacation in the summer holidays," Bill says. "It went directly to Number One and after that our whole life changed completely. It was a new life and that was our dream, our dream come true."

The resulting success caused a frenzy that some concert promoters in Germany weren't quite prepared for.

"We were playing a village party, a small festival and there were only 100 or 200 people expected," Tom Kaulitz says. "It was booked six months in advance and we released our first single Monsoon in Germany and we came to that festival."

"There were so many fans and thousands of people, the security was absolutely not ready for that," Bill says. "It was then we knew we had fans. Before it was always five or 10 people in a club just drinking beer and not looking at us."

The toughest thing a new band often has to do is learn how to say no to growing demands. A grueling touring schedule earlier this year left Bill Kaulitz unable to speak for 10 days following surgery to remove a cyst from a vocal chord.

"I was really afraid," he says. "We only played 10 concerts and had to cancel 16 (including a Toronto gig). I was in my hotel room and I looked (at the clock) and I was thinking at this time normally I'm on stage so it was really, really hard."

However, like so many identical twins, Bill had Tom nearby to act as his almost telepathic speaker.

"It's a very cool connection and a very special connection," Bill says of being a twin. "I think nobody else has a connection like that. I had a book and wrote things down (after surgery) but there were some things where I just looked at Tom."

"I always know what Bill is thinking in different situations because I think the same," Tom says without missing a beat. "I had to speak for him for 10 days, it wasn't a great time."

Having an affinity for the cosmopolitan Japanese city, German quartet Tokio Hotel would love to find itself in a Tokyo hotel sometime in the near future.

"We've never been there," guitarist Tom Kaulitz says. "They have a Jacuzzi in the room and you can just lie there."

"And they have the flat screen televisions over your head," bassist Georg Listing adds. "We really want to go but haven't yet."

"I have heard so much about the hotels in Tokyo and how nice they are," Bill Kaulitz says. "So I think that town is really, really crazy and we would love to go there."

While a Japanese tour is still in the works, Tokio Hotel is surprised by their North American fans.

"What we saw the last time is that our fans are so energetic, they are screaming and waiting for us," Bill says.

I just learned something new that I thought I would share with all of you who might be considering that singing Happy Birthday to the band at one of the US Concerts would be a REALLY SWELL IDEA! As you know, the band is from Germany and they have different cultural norms than we do. In Germany, it is considered bad luck to sing it to someone before their birthday. So, just something to keep in mind before you doom the guys to seven years of bad luck or something.

From Stockholm to Tel Aviv, from Lisbon to Moscow. Everywhere Tokio Hotel leaves their fans in hysteria. Now the chosen Hamburgers continue their conquering of America. The kids in the states are crazy about the hit “Monsoon” (”Durch den Monsun”), and sent the video straight to the top on MTV USA! R&B megastars like Nelly and Chris Brown are left behind.

The critics of the New York Times themselves were flabbergasted about the first US concert of the rock boys, and judged: “Surprisingly appealing from beginning to end”. And the US magazine “Rolling Stone” found that Bill’s “odd English pronunciation” makes their music only still more charming. In August, Bill (18), Tom (18), Gustav (19), and Georg (21) give concerts in Chicago, San Francisco, and Dallas, among other things. But work also gets done back home. Currently, the twins spend every free minute with Tokio Hotel producer David Jost (35) in their Hamburg studio. Jost: “Bill covers every last crumpled piece of paper in his pocket with lyrics. Mostly there’s still a hotel logo from the last foreign trips on it. He’s a little chaotic, and he has also already lost a lot of these papers. But he unfortunately isn’t interested in typing any of these ideas onto his laptop himself.”

In February 2008 the city of New York was once again invaded by hordes of screaming girls and it could mean only one thing – another boy band was in town. This time however there was something different about the whole thing – all the slogans and declarations of love on the T-shirts and posters were not in English, but in German. “Bill, ess briiingt miiiisch oummm,” for example, (“Bill, it’s gonna kill me”) as the line from one of the band’s hits goes. This was also the refrain sung by most of the female fans at the Tokio Hotel gig at the Fillmore NY club – New York’s legendary concert venue that in the past has seen fans reeling in the aisles to such musical greats as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

After taking Europe by storm the band went stateside and – to everybody’s amazement – managed to conquer America, too. At first the media back home in Germany were in some cases more amused than impressed, they did try however to find an explanation for the phenomenon. How could it be that four young guys – in fact, barely-of-age guys – from the town of Magdeburg in eastern Germany had now become icons of global youth culture, or even sex symbols?

Hair Like A Porcupine

Without doubt their look most definitely played a crucial role. The lead singer, Bill, has spiky hair like a porcupine, eyes lined with kohl and he is dressed like a punk, which makes him look like one of those Japanese manga figures. The guitarist, Tom, Bill’s identical twin brother, goes more for shaggy Rasta dreadlocks and the baggy hip-hop look. Fan forums are equally as obsessed with the way the brothers look as they are with the music.

Of course, there is never success without money. Tokio Hotel’s label, Universal, is one of the biggest on the music scene and has spared neither effort nor expense to market the quartet to a young audience via websites, publicity campaigns and magazines. This however is not enough to explain their success, especially when you think that only one tenth of all performing artists manage to bring home a profit for their recording companies. Promoting a new act, as we see, can quite definitely involve quite a few risks, as one of the business’s top dogs found out to its dismay – SonyBMG had signed on Tokio Hotel, but terminated their contract just before their breakthrough in 2005.

By word of mouth on new grapevines

Another vital publicity factor these days is the effect of internet platforms like YouTube and MySpace that enable new trends to spread like wildfire. It is a form of the classic word-of-mouth advertising that uses different channels to not only overcome international barriers, but also linguistic ones. This is in fact what makes the success of Tokio Hotel so surprising – most of the lyrics they sing are in German.

Before Tokio Hotel there were of course other German success stories. Kraftwerk, for example, who, with their song Autobahn, pioneered the myth of fast-lane freedom for fast-lane individuals. Nina Hagen is still a well-known face in the USA, famous for her outrageous performances; the same with Nena who managed get to number two in the US charts in 1983 with her song 99 Red Balloons. Since the end of the 1990s Rammstein has been the most successful musical export in German. With their explosive stage show, brute-force arrangements and their sometimes controversial lyrics the group promotes the cliché of the remorseless, sinister Teuton.

Tokio Hotel have also pulled off another great feat – they have triggered a huge, new surge of interest in the German language. “German is sexy,” as two female fans at the concert in New York told the German magazine, Focus. “Young Americans and Canadians have started learning German so that they can understand the lyrics better,” says Wolfram Hermann of the Goethe-Institut in Boston. “There has been a huge response,” confirms his colleague in Rome, Elisa Costa. In Italy ten per cent more teenagers between the ages of 11 and 16 have enrolled in German courses. In France, according to information published in the German news magazine, Spiegel, it as many as 25 per cent. On the institute’s website in Italy there was a competition in which you could win 100 Tokio Hotel concert tickets – in two weeks 5,000 people took part in it. They had to answer the questions in German. On the Rome underground graffiti has now appeared exalting the names of the band members and proclaiming in German messages like “ich liebe dich” (I love you) or “du bist mein Engel” (You are my angel).

Another clear sign of the group’s potential is the fact that T-shirts, posters and biographies are available all over the place, whether you are in Palermo or Istanbul, New York or Paris. Tokio Hotel has furthermore paved the way for other young German bands to make it in a big way, for example, Cinema Bizarre or Nevada Tan. This is the reason why branches of the Goethe-Institut in Europe and in North America are planning further online campaigns and cooperation projects with both schools and the press to enhance the spread of the German language.

Young, surprising and sexy

The aim here is to achieve what Hesse, Goethe and Grass, etc, did not quite manage to do. The fans at the Fillmore NY concert all sang in unison “Wir häm unns toadgeliiebt” [LOL...Toad?](We've loved ourselves to death) from the Tokio Hotel song, Loved To Death. It might not sound quite as elegant as Goethe’s Wayfarer's Night Song, “In allen Wipfeln spürest du kaum einen Hauch” (In all the treetops you feel hardly a breath of air) – maybe that is the reason why the quality press and state institutions were initially so reluctant to jump on the Tokio Hotel bandwagon. Can a band with such bizarre hairstyles and lyrics oozing with the Weltschmerz of youth represent a country that is respected as the world’s top exporting nation?

The answer lies with the fans. Not just in Germany, but everywhere the fans camp out for days in all kinds of weather in the hope of getting the best concert tickets – be it in Geneva, Tel Aviv or Moscow. It is hard to put into a nutshell why there is so much enthusiasm for Tokio Hotel. One thing is for sure – they have certainly managed to introduce the world to a new image of Germany – one that is young, surprising and sexy.

Girls are screaming, keeping their posters, some of them have tears in the eyes. Conan O’Brien in his Late-Night-Show had never so big happiness for german band. "Unbeliavable,“ mumble for himself and turn his head. Already three days before this show were there fans. There were crowd of fans in front of studio for more than two blocks. But only 120 fans had luck and get inside. America has real Tokio Hotel fever! It can be performance, autogramme session or radio interview – all pictures are the same: everywhere are hysterical fans, closed streets! Bill, Tom, Georg and Gustav really made it. Nobody believed it – Tokio Hotel made absolutely storm in America! They are already on titles of some magazines, they have special fans (Jay-Z or Nicole Scherzinger from Pussycat Dolls) and they should have tour with Jonas Brothers on autumn – unbeliavable start in country of all possibilities. Such popularity didn’t singer of band even seen in his dreams. Bill: "A long time ago I sat at home in front of posters of famous stars and I told to myself how it would be if person would be such superstar. But that I could get so far, I even didn’t dream about this!“ But international success has also black sides: in their homeland Germany are loosing Tokio Hotel their popularity and their favor go down. Critics are bigger, many people who supported them showed already to band their backs in anger and first fanclubs are closing. And Tokio Hotel unfortunately are doing nothing to get their fans back. New single or album are not in plan for the soonest future. Instead of that they are playing concerts in abroad like America. New album of TH should be born in the beginning of 2009 – for many fans unfortunately too late!

About the Album

How hard is it for a German rock band to break it big in the U.S.? For most, even conquering Europe is still no guarantee that label executives here will see and hear anything original, groundbreaking, or just plain good enough to warrant a contract.

German emo quartet Tokio Hotel is the first to do so in a long, long time and they're breaking down barriers in a huge way, making new fans here as readily as U.K. acts have done for ages.

A lot of their success can be chalked up to the androgynous charisma of their teenage frontman Bill Kaulitz, who appears on the album cover with his trademark giant hair, looking like an angry, punk-y, elf.

Their debut single, the angsty, tense-yet-rollicking "Ready, Set, Go!" is not only on the charts, it was incorporated in an episode of The Hills.

The band shows its depth (the degree of which is remarkable when you consider that these are very young men) on their second single, the non-sappy, shimmering ballad "Monsoon," where stacks of processed guitar chords shimmer and throb on the chorus.

Tokio Hotel really writes to the song, allowing whatever they need to stylistically to carry it off. Sometimes they're emo, sometimes more punk, sometimes more bubblegum pop, other times more glam-sounding or even Detroit-style garage. Maybe here or there a flourish of electronica would serve nicely, or a strain of somber cello... no problem. They add it.

But the common denominator is that their music is well written, melodic, and original. Three attributes that will get you noticed in the music world. And Scream has landed inside the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 album chart, and also made them household names across Europe and in Canada.

Kaulitz' voice is fantastic, and adding charm to it is his slight accent. This is, after all, their first English-language album. But there is also no dead weight here. Guitars, drums and bass are handled with chops and maturity of music school grads.

Fans of guitar-based rock and hooky melodies, but who don't want to rot their teeth on overly-sweet confections of many axe-wielding pop ensembles, will love Tokio Hotel: a band that can start an ultimately hummable tune with a blast of ferocity.

Tokio Hotel is surely a band to watch in the future, but more important, a band to hear right now.

Tokio Hotel - Princes of the Parc!

More than thirty thousand people came to see TH in the PdP. More than just an event, it’s the first time that such a young band fills on its own a stadium that is usually reserved for bigger ones.

June 21, 17:00. The opening of doors to the public finally permits many fans to enter/stamp down the lawn of the Parc. A dream comes true!

19:10. A young band from the region of Lille (59), goes up on the main stage: "Good evening, we are called BP Zoom!", says Lionel, the blond singer all intimidated by the huge crowd in front of his eyes. From the first song, the crowd quickly joins and everyone on the lawn lifts his arms in the air. The quartet asks: "For you to make the walls of the stadium shake!" The pop-rock quartet takes the opportunity to play its hits ("Appel aux Plastiscines") and those of others (" If You Want Blood "AD / DC), while thanking TH for their invitation. The ovation is general and the mission to heat up the stadium is fulfilled to 100%!

19:55. The sun still shines on the walls of the PSG, the excitement mounts by one level. The stadium wave creeps over the bleachers, across the lawn to restart with a vengeance. The feast of music with your preferred band in the Parc, that does not happen every day!

What fireworks!
20:50. The sirens are screaming in the sound system. The giant plateau opens on the scene. Gustav, the drummer, begins the famous "Ich brech aus" under the first explosions and other effects of blowing pyrotechnics. The Parc screams of joy! The concert kicks off. Bill, dressed in black leather, red tee-shirt and silver belt, is visibly in great shape. Whew, his voice is strong. He shows a confident smile. "Hello everyone!" Impressed by the immensity of the stadium, he profits from an advanced stage (catwalk) of more than fifty metres to make the crowd scream on "Der letzte Tag". The boys have decided to put substantial resources. The first fireworks announce the famous "Leb’ die Sekunde", the opportunity for Gustav to enjoy the heat of the flamethrowers that are stirring around his drums. The sirens sound again on the hymn "Schrei", introduced megaphone in hand by Bill’s … voice. The fans are especially happy to hear him sing in German, as the entire repertoire tonight.

21:30. We are entitled to classical interludes videos (Devilish period, then corridors of the Room 483), the time for Bill to change his clothes (leather and red belt, blue jean with red stripes), and retain all his emotion on the powerful "Stich ins Glück". Then it takes off with a vengeance with the furious "Übers Ende der Welt" and "Reden"! The singer addressed the public several times in his native language. The central plateau then closes around Gustav. It's time for "Spring nicht" and "Wo sind eure Hände". The screens turn red and hearts are breaking. The night falls on the Parc as thirty thousand voices raise on the famous "Durch den Monsun" and acoustic versions of "In die Nacht" and "Rette mich." On "Vergessene Kinder”, the public created a giant German flag with balloons. The four heroes fly away on the giant plateau on the sublime "An deiner Seite (Ich bin da)" in conclusion. Fireworks and explosions of joy guaranteed. Gustav deserves his stadium wave, raise your hand!

I’ve known TH for two years, because of the internet. I love their look, their music, and since I learned German for three years, I can understand their lyrics. Ma favourite song is Totgeliebt. I’ve already seen them on 10/16, 03/16 and 03/10.

A friend told me about TH. I don’t know any German, but Lisa translates the lyrics for me or I go on fan sites. I’ve already seen them at the Zénith and in Bercy, so I know that the show is going to be awesome.

A friend made me discover TH two years ago, and I already liked their music and the way they dress.

I love TH, even though I don’t understand the lyrics. But, for me, it’s not the most important thing, I prefer their looks and their songs. Ma favourite song is Durch Den Monsun. For tonight, I hope that Bill is healthy and that his throat is going to be better.

I’ve known TH because of my friends, the TV, the radio… But it’s the first time I see them in concert, it’s going to be awesome!

I heard TH for the first time on a sampler of ROCK ONE, and I wanted to hear more. I love their universe. I even went to Nice to see their show. Tonight, I hope they play a lots of songs from their first album.

A friend told me about TH on MSN and when they started to be a little more known here, I had interest for them. And since, I love everything about them! Tonight is going to be my second concert. We woke up at 5am to go to their hotel. But nobody was excited there so we went somewhere else in hope to see them. We went back at the hotel at 10:30, we saw them get out but they left quickly.

We are from Liège, Belgium, and it’s the first time we’re going to see TH in show. It’s going to be beautiful and big.

I’ve known TH for more than two years, from the internet. It’s their name that intrigued me at first. I listened to them straight away, without even seeing pictures of them. I love the fact that they are young rockers, and German. It’s going to be the fourth time I’ll see them, so I hope for some surprise, like a different stage or set list.

Hi everyone and welcome to Exposé. In the next 30 minutes, you will learn more about the phenomenon of the German band, Tokio Hotel.

I went all the way to Paris for their concert, presented in front of 50 thousand people at Le Parc des Princes and I used this trip to meet a few people who helped the band’s career in France and in Québec.

The security is tight!

It’s outside of the Hyatt Paris that the Tokio Hotel fans are waiting with hope to maybe meet the members of the band, who are staying there while they are in Paris.

How long have you been waiting outside the hotel this morning?
-9am
-Yesterday
-2pm
-I just want to say that we aren’t groupies, it’s just that we don’t have any more voice. We had to tell you, that’s it.

How long have you been here?
-Saturday

So, what are you doing? You stay here?
-Yeah, we sleep.

How long have you been waiting outside?
-Half an hour

-No, it’s been two hours.

Mom makes a correction!
-Two hours!
-10:30 this morning.

Did you see them?
-No. They left by the back doors.

How did you know the band was staying at this hotel?
-Well, on the internet.
-On a discussion forum about Le Parc des Princes.

Why are you Tokio Hotel fans? What’s the story behind it?
-The rock, firstly. Then, German-rock. The lyrics, what they are saying, everything. It’s everything, in fact.
-The lyrics, well, it’s just like us, we think the same.
-The music is awesome, and they are nice…

-Yes, yeah.

-I feel overwhelmed, having them so near, it’s too good.

Part 2:

Still wanting to find more about Tokio Hotel, I met Pierre Veillet, editor of four French magazines, including Rock One, which has been the first French magazine to put Tokio Hotel on the cover.

-We were the first to discover Tokio Hotel in France, I have to say, it’s our readers, girl readers because most of the time it was girls who told us about the phenomenon, who informed us about a German band, Germany is a frontier country of France, which didn’t have until then the habit to bring us lots of bands. We were surprised, we were receiving lots of mail, and it the letters, we noticed that there was an idol, a singer that had a particular style, who liked, who was influenced by J-rock or the image we have of it, mangas and whatnot. A character a little bit unreal, Bill. A band that was made of two brothers, Bill and Tom, and two other musicians, our readers mentioned them as well, we shouldn’t forget them, Gustav and Georg.

I stopped by Universal Music France to meet the international marketing director, who started Tokio Hotel’s career in France.

-I think that Tokio Hotel, it works and it’s this big right now because everything is good. In fact, I think that it’s not only the songs, it’s not only the looks, everything is awesome. And the band came out at a good moment, what I mean is that there isn’t a lot of young artists who make rock nowadays. The kids nowadays, let’s say between 16 and 25 years old, continued to identify themselves to people like The Cure, Marilyn Manson, Placebo, Indochine, but that’s our generation, they are artists who are 30, 35, even 40 years old. Now they can identify to an artist who is similar to them, Tokio Hotel talk about problems that their fans know, teenagers problems, teenagers questions, things that teenagers live. The music is good because it’s credible, the band is good because they can play live, sing live, credible too. The image is just completely genial, they all have a particular look, Bill, he’s just fabulous, out of nowhere. And they had things to day that were appropriate, with a real message, not just “the weather’s awesome, blah blah, I love you, me neither, you don’t love me” and, yeah. Something consistent. And I think that’s what triggered all this hysteria.

How are they to photography, are they easy, are they comfortable in front of the camera, how are they?
-Well in front of a camera, is it a television camera or a photography camera, they are photogenic, they know exactly what they want to give. Though, they are a little hard to lead, when we want to have something different, when we want to have a new image of them, they aren’t against some things, but they control their image, that’s kind of normal though.

In addition to having a big success in France, Tokio Hotel crossed the Atlantic all the way to Québec, and who’s better to talk about it than Jonathan Bergeron, director of Universal Music, in Montréal.

First time you met them, firstly, what did you think they’d be like, and were they just like what you thought?
-Well, I thought that they would be really cold, you know, Germans sometimes… it’s not mean, it’s just… and they were big, when I first met them they had already sold 3 or 4 million albums in Europe, I thought they’d be pretentious, not nice. But no, really, really nice, really warm and like, “thank you for what you do for us here, it’s very impressing, we’re arriving here in Canada and we think there’ll be only two people at our show but there’s thousands and they slept outside to see us”. So yeah, the impression was really positive.

-They are really sexy, they make really good music and yeah, I love it.

According to Welt Online, Bill and Tom recently attended a Full Moon Party at the Indochine in Hamburg. The were partying at another club as well, but didn’t like it. Here is the translation.

Amongst Thailand fans and backpackers they’re legendary: “Full Moon Parties”, which are celebrated on each full moon night with illuminated balloons and psychedelic music at the beach of Haad Rin on the island of Koh Pha-Ngan. Up to 10 000 people come to the mass dance to the sounf of the sea. We also have water and full moon in Hamburg, thought Truong Tung, managing director of “Indochine” and Dojan Jung Young Creatives, who brought the party to the Elbe. “Indochine” will hold only 500 jolly people, who had to wait in long lines, but that did not detract from the atmosphere. Between elaborate Asian decorations and lighting installations people danced if they could find a spot in the Ice Bar, on the terrace or in the lounge area. The Parisian DJane Joana de la Jungle took care of the music, and the London violinist Sophie Serafino contributed with handmade sounds. Late hour suprise: Germany’s most famous rocker twins Bill and Tom Kaulitz of Tokio Hotel mixed among the audience and showed no fear of pushing and barging in. Previously the two teen idols were celebrating in the new Upper East, but little amused: “There are all weird people there,” said Bill.

MOD Controversy:
Im not sure if you knwo anything about this or not, but before we got to the voting we better fill you guys in!

During MOD last week [17th] Leah Miller said that Bill looked like a girl, along with a few other things. So, overnight many fans were outraged and emailed their opinions. There was also a poll on the MOD site asking people if they thought Bill looked like a girl.

The next day, during MOD, Leah Miller acknowledged all that had happened and stayed true to her opinion of Bill. There were fans outside, holding up big signs saying “LEAH SUCKS!” and “Bill is Sexy”, so she went outside and signed their signs as Leah “The Bitch” Miller. When they returned from their commercial break, she again stood by her opinion and backed it up.

They then went outside with the fans, where Tim Deegan asked them why Leah sucked. The fans obviously replied that it was because she said Bill looked like a girl, and Tim asked how they didn’t think he looked like a girl because of his hair, makeup and overall look. The girls said they believed Bill looked like a boy, despite his feminine appearance.

After talking with the girls, we were brought back inside with Leah Miller where she acknowledged all of the emails and read out an email that agreed with her, and one that disagreed with her. She then went on to explain her opinion, and say that he’s attractive, not ugly. He just looks like a girl. Then they got the whole audience to say he looked like a girl, and went to a break.

Interview with Bill and Tom about Andreas

TOTP: How do you got to know Andreas?

BILL: He went to school in Wolmirstedt with us. I did not have many friends besides him at school. Tom and I left the school in 10 th class. Andreas expires this year.

TOTP: Are you and Andreas equal?

TOM: He is just like us. Good friends must be the same. And that is what we are.

TOTP: Is he just as intense as you are?

BILL: Um, I think he is the right mix. Sometimes it’s very exciting. We will match perfectly. He is as spontaneous as Tom and I, and we have the same humor. That is very important to me in terms of friends, that we can laugh together.

TOTP: How do you know that you can rely on him?

TOM: It comes with the time.. We have known him for 7 years now, and we can trust him, because he was on our side from the beginning and he knows everything about us.

BILL: We’ve been friends so long. So he's with all my close friends - I knew from the outset that I could rely on the judgment. And judgment often proves that I was right.

TOTP: Does Andreas calm down you when you argue?

TOM: No, not at all. He is always on the side he thinks is right.

TOTP: Does he tell others that he's friends with the boys from TH?

BILL: He would never do that . He and my other friends are very reserved with regard to that. When we meet, we never talk about the band, with the exception of entirely different things. When we are with our friends, we are always private.

TOTP: Are you talking frequently with him on the phone?

BILL: Every day. I talk to my parents and my friends daily. I'm always on the phone. ;)

TOTP: Has Andreas wanted to join TH?

TOM: We 4 have been together for 7 years, and we will always be that we now.It will not become more member. Andreas is the drummer in his own band.

TOTP: Will he persecuted by your fans?

BILL: There are in some limits. We’re working hard to keep our friends outside of everything, because we know what it is like to be in the public’s focus.

Formerly the group Devilish, Bill, Tom, Gustav, and Georg now make up Tokio Hotel — and the uber-cuties from Germany are taking the U.S. by storm! I caught up with them at their recent New York City show at The Fillmore at Irving Plaza (a venue where most rock legends have performed), where the line to get in was hundreds deep and, according to one fan, people were waiting for hours to get a spot in front of the stage.

Hey, guys! It must be really exciting to perform in New York. Do you love the city?

Bill and Georg:
Very! Yeah, we like it, but we love L.A. too, with the warm weather, sunshine, and big houses.

What’s the difference between your European fan base and your U.S. one?

Bill:
We were really surprised when we came to North America because we expected it to be different than in Germany. We expected people to be calm, laid-back, and checking us out from a distance. But as soon as we got onstage here, everyone got really excited and started to yell and scream the way we were used to from home. We were really surprised. Having fans like that gives us a lot of power and energy when we’re onstage. We love it! It was such a shock that our shows here are selling out. It’s more than we ever expected.

That’s pretty amazing to be selling out shows here in the U.S. on your first North American tour.

Bill:
Yeah. We’re so excited.

So tell me, who were your musical influences?

Bill:
We couldn’t find a single common influence.

Tom:
I influenced them all.

Bill, Gustav, Georg:
Ha!

Bill:
We listen to so many different kinds of music. Tom only listens to German hip-hop, but I listen to a lot of rock, so we couldn’t really agree on one band that influenced us. Everyone brought his own style to the group, even if Georg doesn’t have any style [rest of band laughs]. What we created with Tokio Hotel was just our common ground of liking a variety of bands. We wanted that to influence our music.

How’d you get the name?

Bill:
[Band laughs simultaneously]
The reason everyone laughed is because now you’re getting into the dark past. We used to go by a different name – Devilish, but that was all Bill’s idea. To tell you the truth, Devilish didn’t have any meaning. We tried to remember why we chose that name, but couldn’t. When we started to get deals with record companies, we thought it was time to find a name that fits and one we all liked. We love New York and L.A. because they’re really big cities, and we chose Tokio [the German spelling of Tokyo] because it’s a wicked place. Then we wanted to find a symbol that represented our lives, and we came up with Hotel because we’re living out of hotels these days. Our lives are packed in our suitcases and we always carry them behind us.

How would you describe your personal style?

Gustav:
Well, we’ve got a womanizer, a comedian, a bodyguard… [the whole band starts to laugh]. Actually, no, we’re not about rules – we didn’t want to create one image.

Bill:
Yeah, if we had to do that, Georg wouldn’t even be here today [band laughs]. We’re not about playing any characters — we’re just us, just being ourselves. What you see is what you get. If you look at old pictures of us from when we were called Devilish, you will see how everyone started to find his own style. That’s what we’re about.

What would your advice be to anyone who wanted to get a start in music?

Bill:
We hate to be in the position of telling people what to do because when we started, people who were older and had been in the business a while would tell us how we should act and what we should do, and we didn’t like that. Everyone has to make their own decisions and go through their own experience – find out for yourself. Everyone has to find their way. The only thing I would say is that it’s important to play live, go onstage, and have fun because that’s what it’s all about. And it’s important to make mistakes. That’s what we did and still do. Georg is still making 10 to 15 mistakes every day [band laughs]. Just do your thing!

What’s your favorite thing to do online?

Tom:
[laughing] I’m not sure you want to know! Actually, I basically check e-mail and watch videos.

Georg:
Yeah, I watch videos. I just watched Scream.

Gustav:
I just watch a video where the filmmakers raced an Audi against a BMW. The BMW won.

Tokio Hotel in Geneva: Danger for the fans?

Chaos in Geneva – The Tokio Hotel concert in Switzerland was dangerously cramped for the fans, according to blick.ch. What have you experienced at a Tokio Hotel concert?

Holding out for hours in front of the venue entrance; security causing trouble for the fans; an inadequate building. These are serious allegations raised against the organisers of the Tokio Hotel concert in Geneva by the father of a 16-year-old girl to blick.ch.

The father had already accompanied his daughter to several Tokio Hotel gigs, yet what he experienced in Geneva was truly crazy. “The girls were cooped up for hours. And the crowd got worse and worse.” He continues: “Girls were toppling down in rows. Even I had to gasp for air.”

However, according to blick.ch, the father was especially irritated about the security guards, who allegedly kept water bottles in the parched crowd, but repeatedly took them back as soon as a girl reached for one.

Now an offender is being sought after, the organiser of the Tokio Hotel Geneva concert reportedly has strict restrictions.

"We Are Not Puppets!"

For those who don’t know you again, how have you four met?
Tom: Bill and I, we started making music when we were 7. We have always prefered that to video games! We have devote it all our free time, the evenings, the weekends. Bill played the keyboard, because we didn’t have anyone else to be in charge of the drum and bass. I met Gustav when we were at the Academy, we’ve become friends then.
Gustav: And then, one day, I attended one of their performances. When I saw Bill on stage playing the keyboard, I said to myself that we should really change that. (laughs.) We have therefore began to discuss it and I proposed to play with them. It was at this time that we became a group.

What would you want to reply to the people that say that you are a marketing product?
Bill: Oh my God! To say such nonsense, they must be frustated people! Still, it’s the classic bullshit that we hear in the music business. Specially in Germany, because these last years, as in England in the 90’s, there are many castings to form a boys bands and a girls bands. There are even TV shows whose aim is to find THE next band. Suddenly, it’s very difficult for a real formation that didn’t pass by the reality-tv circuit to impose themselves and to make a break out. Nowadays it’s very difficult to convince people that we are a real band, that nobody told us to be friends with Gustav or Georg. In any case people don’t believe us. Consequently, we do our thing without worrying with these rumours. Music, it’s an emotion; if you’re just a puppet, how can you put your soul in what you do? For my part, I believe that I put my soul to it, so I get angry when people think that what I do is plastic. But at one point you have to put some distance between those rumours and you otherwise you are “eaten”.

What relation do you have with your fans?
Tom: If we can, we talk to them, sign autographs…it’s the least we can do, because where you go, they are there! Sometimes they wait for hours or they even spend the night there, on the street. Whether it’s cold, raining, snowing, they are there. And then, they offer us gifts that they made with their hearts and souls. So, give them a little of our time, it’s the least we can do to show them how what they do counts to our eyes. We’d like to measure up to their love.

What’s the most remarkable gift that a fan has offered you?
Bill: It’s a difficult question, because we receive tons and tons of gifts. We are very touched by the letters of our fans. Some are very long. There is one that has 14 Km! It’s almost a book of 1000 A4 sheets.
Georg: If not, we’ve received a car, a Mini Cooper equiped with our photos and names. But it’s really impossible to choose a particular gift, because they all mean something to us.

Do you take the time to go to forums or your MySpace?
Bill: You have to be careful because in the forums, there are many people that pretend to be us, that chat with our fans and fool them. If we are on the Internet, is always as a group and is announced officially. Apart from that, we spend many time on the blogs dedicated to us or in our MySpace, because their opinions matters a lot to us.

The girls are crazy for you, but, you, what’s your type of girl?
Tom: It’s a difficult question, because I don’t have a certain type of girl in mind. It must just be a good feeling from the start, a connection that starts the relation naturally. She can be blond, brunette, red-haired, it doesn’t matter. But with the life we have, we don’t have the time for a love relationship. At least, I mean a real love relationship. At the same time, that doesn’t interest me to be faithful, commit myself…I mainly want to enjoy myself. I was mad for a lot of girls. Too many girls. (laughs). I really think we can fall in love several times in a lifetime and that, luckily, several people are made for us.
Georg: As far as I’m concerned, I’d love to find a girl that looks like Angelina Jolie, the Olsen twins and Eva Langoria.
Gustav: So, we will fight for the same girl Georg. (laughs)
Bill: I love that the girl has a great look, nice nails and a beautiful skin. And then, especially, that they are positive and playful. I don’t like one night stands. I truly believe in true love, a love that you only find once in a lifetime…if you have the chance. Because I think that many people never find it, which is very sad… I’ve already met girls, I’ve already fall in love. I know what it is to have a flash for someone and the butterflies on your belly, but I still haven’t found love with a big L.

Bill you have a unique look. Did you always like to wear make up, you do your nails?
Bill: I do that since a long time ago. Gustav and Georg didn’t even ever known me with a different look. I started to like to wear make up when I participated in a Halloween evening some years ago. I’ve disguise myself as a vampire. And then I kept that look. It’s part of my personality.

How many time in the morning do you spend to make you beautiful?
Bill: Not much. About forty minutes.

Do you have any ritual before going on stage?
Bill: It’s not really a ritual. Gustav likes to stay alone, concentrate himself, listen to music. As for Georg, Tom and me we like to meet together backstage before the show starts and stress the three.(laughs) We close ourselves in the green room for half an hour and nobody can came in. Even our manager! We imagine the worst things that can happen, we laugh about it and that relaxes us.

And when you’re not on stage how do you spend your free time?
Georg: We play ping-pong and kicker!
Tom: And when we’re not on tour, we like to sleep very late! Expect Gustav, who is an early bird. But Bill, Georg and me we like to eat, watch tv and sleep. And when we can really make a break, we like to go on vacations.

And what’s your favourite destination?
Tom: All I can tell you is that we love the little isolated islands very, very, very far from here.(laughs)

By force of circumstance, you spend many time together. Do you maintain friendships outside the band?
Tom: Yes, of course! Because it’s important for us to be able to talk about other things besides Tokio Hotel. But because we share the same friends, we are always the four. And then, we go on vacations together.(laughs) Thus, yes, Tokio Hotel, is our most beautiful friendship story.

And you never fight?
Tom: Oh, we’d want to sometimes. Especially when Georg decides to remove his shoes. (laughs) But our friendship is stonger than the disputes!

Even if you are loved by your fans, is there always something about yourselves that you don’t like?
Bill: (laughs) We didn’t change, we are the same. We have the same flaws than before. And we have the same relation with each other than before we’ve known success. So, even if it’s crazy to be 18 years old and see so many girls mad about yourself, there are always things I don’t like about myself. I don’t walk in the streets telling myself that I’m the greatest guy in the world. Tom does, always.(laughs)
Tom: There’s always something that we don’t like about ourselves. But it’s normal; we are 18, we seek. And for our age, we have a strong confidance in ourselves. When I say I’m the best, I don’t take the lead.

What souvenirs do you keep from your childhood? How you describe yourselves at that time?
Bill: We always had confidence in ourselves and in our future. We had a lot of character. We have started very early making music, because we have since young known what was good for us. That wasn’t always easy to live. At school, we didn’t want to go into a mold, that’s what created clashes between us and the teachers and the other students. But apart from the fact of hating highschool, we had truly great fun.
Tom: Me, I’m always crazy. I’ve always in me the child I was. Fourtunely, he isn’t in the people.(laughs) He guides me everyday.
Bill: But contrary to what our fans may think, we are far from being perfect. We recognize the success that we have, but we don’t want to be an example to people!

Band Update!:

Georg, Bill, Tom and Gustav are on European-tour at the moment - in the next time they will play in Italy, Switzerland and Belgium. After this, the four are going into the studio to work on their third album. Bill (18) writes on the way all his song-ideas down, handles them with the team into new songs. Summer holiday is not in sight for the boys. ‘Cause they have to prepare themselves for the next US-trip. “MTV TRL USA” is planning a whole week with Tokio Hotel as from the 4th August. After this will follow an US-tour.

Glam-rockers Tokio Hotel have announced dates for a summer headlining run through North America behind the band’s English-language debut, “Scream.”

The German quartet–lead singer Bill Kaulitz, guitarist Tom Kaulitz, drummer Gustav Schafer and bassist Georg Listing–is making another attempt on American markets this year after canceling its spring tour following an injury to Kaulitz’s vocal chords (and subsequent surgery to remove a cyst).

The group will kick off the upcoming run Aug. 7 in Sayreville, NJ, and plans to visit 11 cities on the trek, which runs through late August. Details are below.

“Scream,” released May 6 in the United States, contains English versions of songs from the band’s previous German-language albums, 2005’s “Schrei” and last year’s “Zimmer 483.” Although the new album–which is sold as “Room 483″ in German-speaking territories, the English translation of “Zimmer 483″–has performed well in Europe, selling more than 600,000 copies to date, the band has struggled to gain popular success in the US, although the group has attracted a ground swelling of support due to its theatrical live act.

Formed in Magdeburg, Germany in 2001, Tokio Hotel has scored four No. 1 singles and two No. 1 albums in its native Germany, and has sold more than 3 million CDs and DVDs combined, according to a press release.

The world has completely surrender to the music of our four dream boys. Tokio Hotel has performed in concert all over the world and drag thousands of fans till they arrived to Portugal. We’ve waited this day for so long that even inside Atlantic Pavilion we still couldn’t believe the hour had came! While the lights didn’t went out they told us everything they felt till they got here!

“We’ve had many important moments in our career and we had many luck but, sometimes, it’s still hard to believe it!” Our beautiful ones still don’t believe that we’re crazy about them, because it’s impossible not to be! A Special Concert!
Everything went dark and we realized: the time has come! As the big letters at the bottom of Atlantic Pavilion said: “True fans will always came back!” We went wild with excitement just on the first accords: «Break Away»! Bill came out as a God in the platform next to Gustav’s drums! They followed with «Final Day» and «1000 Oceans» and we could not stop enjoying! “Hello everyone! Bill has been perfect! At the Lisbon concert, he was always super fun and didn’t stop pushing for us! We went wild with excitement when he took the megaphone on «Scream», and we almost fainted when he sat next to the band to play an acoustic version of «Rescue Me»! Georg, that was great, came to the front of the stage at the end! It was super funny!!!

Great Musicians!!!
Besides gorgeous and full of energy our beautiful ones played as no one! We couldn’t believe how the musics came out even more perfect live! And Bill’s voice?! Our german God is completely healed! At The Heart of a Musical Hysteria

In the vicinity of the Arena in Geneva, tents show of the fever which accompanies the event. Around this arena, camping, in the midst of tar and concrete, has emerged. This hall greets Tokio Hotel's most daring fans, those who have traveled hundreds of kilometers to see the German band. The wait is exhausting, but the reward is worth the sacrifice: seeing the continent's idols closely. This scenario has been repeating itself in Europe for nearly two years. Such concerts create an earthquake of such magnitude that no other band in the world today is capable of producing. They race through ticket sales, accompanied by anxiety in the parents of those children who are desperate to attend the event.

With Tokio Hotel, we are seeing the same enthusiasm which accompanied careers of bands like Duran Duran, or Spandau Ballet in the 80s. We find the same fever that gave rise to songs from boy and girl bands (Take That, 2Be3, Spice Girls...) a decade later. But today, there is something new. We see a rupture which dissociates Tokio Hotel from other known phenomenons. The band has managed to generate a flood, of a continental scale, in one language: German, which we had formerly considered inappropriate for rock and pop. This could have, even should have, set up a solid barrier to the exporting group. But inexplicably, this "disability" became an asset. The texts of two albums (Schrei and Zimmer 483) are known, translated and published on numerous sites and fan blogs. They are included in choirs in Helsinki, Madrid, Rome, Bratislava, and all the way to Tel Aviv.

But there is more: the look of the quartet. Tokio Hotel has made a brand image. Their recipe? Replicating several dress codes. In this patchwork, the androgynous figure and manga singer, Bill Kaulitz draws attention at first glance. His hair arched out (perhaps extensions?), his pale complexion, his tight and black clothes, his makeup, refer to some new wave and gothic icons. Rober Smith from the Cure, Brian Molko from Placebo in particular. Beside him, there is Tom aesthetic rasta (abundant dreads) and hip-hop (baggy jeans and XXL T-shirts, caps, bandannas and neck chains). Hardcore is represented by the bassist, Georg Listing. Only the drummer, Gustav Schafer eludes easy identification, wearing an obstinate "no-look."

This assembly is not risky. It is very likely that their record label, Universal, and agents of the band - some not exceeding 20 years of age - advise them. The rock, with well-arranged melodies and remarkably produced sound, aims to keep the target audience whose average age ranges between 10 an 16. This recipe pays. The conquest of the North American market will doubtlessly bring more new revenue.

Who is Tokio Hotel then? A product of some laboratory recordings? An entity born from artificial mixtures of musical examples? Partly, no doubt. But a significant portion of its course makes you think otherwise. Bill and Tom's passion with music dates from when they were little. Ever since the age of 7, the twins compose, write lyrics about their parent's divorce and life. They talk of the boredom of a youth who doesn't aspire in school. At Loitsche, village of Magdeburg where they grew up, these two songs of a seamstress and guitarist quickly dreamed of glory.

Bill brushed by it (fame) for the first time when he was 13: he was finalist for the German version of Star Academy or American Idol. A producer, Peter Hoffman was struck by the maturity and look of the teen on the stage. This meeting was decisive. It allowed the loser of the reality TV show to undertake the path of real glory, with his band, Devilish, composed of several school buddies. A changing of name later, Tokio Hotel now has a solid structure and professionalism to reach the firmament. This will be done from the very first album release, Schrei, in 2006. With Schrei, Tokio Hotel was a hit and "Durch den Monsun" traveled borders. A year later, the phenomenon took on enormous proportions with Zimmer 483: sales increased and mobile ring tones were made.

Such a course is rare. Only an operation of the singer's vocal chords was able to interrupt it. The enormity of their success, the magnitude of their tours and promotional obligations that accompany them, can cause concern. 9,500 people, most of which are teenage girls, went to Tokio Hotel's concert, Saturday at the Arena. If the hysteria of the fans has created problems at the entrance, the concert went along without any notable incidents. The security personnel was one of the largest ever put in place at the Arena.

Tokio Hotel rocked the Arena

Tokio Hotel in the Arena, it's done! Last Saturday, there were 9,500 spectators there to applaud the German band.

In the crowd, a majority of girls aged between 12 and 14, or approximately 80% of the public. And a few boys. And adults. Parents for the most part. "There were about 10%. Some are even fans," says Michael Drieber, organizer of the concert. "We were expecting only teens."

Put all those people in the arena. There, the singer Bill Kaulitz and his companion landed, delivering a set of rock as smooth as effective, in German. An hour and 45 minutes presentation. Now we must interpret the reaction of the crowd present at the concert on Saturday. People say Tokio Hotel triggers extreme reactions from fans. Is that true? There is only two options really. With or without hysteria.

"Eeeeeeeeeeee," the fans, mostly teenage girls, scream at the top of their lungs, almost ready to break your eardrums. A few minutes away from the lifting of the curtain, expected at 19:30, the least sound coming from the stage provoked screams from the public.

Finally the band arrives. We await with anxiety the first ones to faint. There are already 90, we learn with astonishment. Indeed the doors of the hall weren't even open, when the most bold fans start pushing for the best places. In the end, 375 people were evacuated urgently. Leading causes were fatigue and dehydration. However, three ambulances specially reserved for the evening were not used.

During the concert, barriers placed in front of the scene, the same we use for open air concerts with 50,000 people, have moved an inch. "Something never seen! The fans were concentrated in the center, in front of the stage. Imagine 8 or 9 people per square meter! The pressure on the barriers was extreme."

A concert like the others...
If the mass of the fans - one kilometer line - made it hard for security, the picture was different from their conduct during the concert. "We expected worse. Other than uneasiness, the atmosphere was good."

After the first quarter of an hour, the screams were more discrete. We expected constant screams? This wasn't the case. On the bleachers, mainly family space, were happy just moving and pacing, the more confident stood, sometimes imitated by their parents. We raise our arms, put out our hands and sing along. A boy, 9 or 10, mimes with his guitar, seated on the floor. Seated behind him, his mother smiles.

There it is, the Tokio Hotel phenomenon. Tokio Hotel is rock'n'roll without "sex" or "drugs."

Tokio Hotel: Apathetic at Geneva

Yesterday Tokio Hotel played in front of 10,000 fans in Geneva. The cheering of the crowd was incredible, as was the self-restraining of the stars.

The first beats sound throughout Geneva Arena at 19:30. 10,000 fans scream as the biggest hits such as ‘Schrei’ or ‘Übers Ende der Welt’ ring out. Tokio Hotel delivers a professional show – and yet, the enthusiasm is missing.

The four Magdeburg boys keep some distance from the crowd. There’s no lack of the thousands of longing hands raised in the air. Above all, Bill, who girls are passionate about, seems as though he can’t keep enough distance between himself and the fans. He sings from a platform behind the drums for the most part of the concert.

The quartet has managed to do what hardly any German-singing bands have succeeded in doing: They’ve made it abroad. With ‘Schrei’ (2005), they found success as being the first German band to get into the French Top 20. The English version climbed to no.39 in the USA Billboard charts, and even to 6th place in Canada. Tokio Hotel has earned 60 million Swiss Francs since their debut. Long since they’ve been laughed at as one-hit wonders, they’ve become out-of-reach superstars.

At the same time, Tokio Hotel always stands for genuineness. They’re no artificial band; they got together by themselves and they’ve all played their instruments since early childhood. In the band’s (mostly self-written) lyrics, they deal with every teen problem – from lovesickness to suicidal thoughts to the separation of parents.

It arrives. Just like Bill’s look. Despite animosity and sneering remarks, he’s never been put off. It’s his style – he already had his first piercing at 12 years old, which was shortly followed by his first tattoos. With success, his appearance became more extreme, his hair longer (his styling recommendation: “Using a can of hairspray every day and never washing your hair”), his eyeliner thicker and his nail varnish more eccentric.

“Always more” seems to have become the band’s motto. But not in one aspect – Tokio Hotel isn’t the approachable band any more. They seal themselves off. “They don’t give any autographs anymore or pose with the fans for photos,” says Andrea (16), from Olden.

A good hundred teenagers were already camping on the sidewalk days before yesterday’s concert so that they would be admitted into the concert hall first. “I haven’t seen anything like it since Michael Jackson or Pink Floyd played here twenty years ago,” says Michael Drieberg, the concert organiser.

Yet, the times in which fans gathered outside the hotels the boys stayed in are over. “Now they stay as far away from the concert hall as possible; sometimes in other areas, so that they won’t get annoyed by us,” complains Manuela (14), from Berne. The distancing from the fans hasn’t been the only consequence of their success – Bill had to have an operation in March due to a cyst in his vocal chords, which interrupted the tour.

Polo Hofer (63) and Marc Dietrich (59) from the Swiss band Peter, Sue & Marc had to undergo this operation, after which their voices got worn thin through the decades. Bill is forty years younger. "

The girls fall down row by row

200 security forces such as nurses and Samaritans were offered at the sold-out Tokio Hotel concert in Geneva – and they were needed, too.

The German rock band played for 90 minutes in front of 10,000 fans at the Geneva Arena and the medical staff had their hands full. They had to be called out up to 250 times in order to nurse the young girls who became unwell back to health.

The run-up to the concert caused some confusion due to the tickets. Originally, the Magdeburg band’s concert was announced for March. However, because the 18-year-old singer Bill Kaulitz had to be subjected to a vocal chord operation early on in the year, some concerts were cancelled, including the one in Geneva.

As a result, the organisers planned to let Tokio Hotel appear at the Stade de Genève this Saturday. But then this venue, with its 25,000 places, was out of the organisers’ league. The tickets for the Stade de Genève were valid for the Geneva Arena. The ones for the cancelled concert in March weren’t, though.

"We have seen little of Modena, but we felt the warmth from the public, it's a great emotion." These were the first words of Tokio Hotel, during their interview on TV by TRL (directly from Pescara, with live connection to Modena) last night, two hours before the concert at Park Novi Sad. The band showed itself really available and tuned with the 18 thousand fans who waited hours before for them, and greeted them screaming inside the venue.

Did you have the chance to visit Modena? "We haven't had a lot of time, today it was a hot day, we arrived by last and in this case, it's difficult to visit the city", each word from the band is\par received by the delirious crowd.

During the interview, Bill Kaulitz and his band have received the award won at the TRL Awards, for the Best Band category: "We're very happy", he said. "We found a lot of love and enthusiasm. How would we split the award? Well, we're four, we'll see how to do it, there's too much joy and the Italian public is fantastic."

Do you have already new songs? "We can't tell for sure when the new album will be out", they said, "we can only tell you that we're working on new songs and soon you'll know some news about it."

To delight of their fans, Tokio Hotel have time to talk about their connection with the audience: "We see a lot of people every time, it's difficult to distinguish just one amongst the crowd. However, we can tell that it has happened several times, noticing in some fans in particular when they're standing in the first row, by the way they get involved in the show and by the way they sing all our songs, those are truly intense moments."

"A life for music", this could be the right motto to identify the band Tokio Hotel: "Definitively, I can't imagine our life without music, it's part of us, a real symbiosis."

GOSSIPS AND RUMORS...[remember it is only gossip and rumours!]
Tokio Hotel's third album is coming out in November, 2008. After conquering the west, and satisfied with the huge amount of fans, the four will release their CD in two versions: in German and in English.
Their first single should air on the radio as early as the following October.
(Keep in mind, this is just a rumor, nothing official, so don't get your hopes raised...)

• It's now official: Tokio Hotel will release their third album in November 2008. In order to persue their conquest of the West and to satisfy a larger number of people,
the quartet will propose two versions: a German one and an English one.

• In the German rock section, Tokio Hotel continue to beat records: their albums have gone platinum, and have had a phenomenal progression/increase (between 230 and 650%!) after being played at the Star Academy; the 34 000 tickets for the Bercy show sold out in 2 days, a new date has been set for Dijon after a petition signing by 5 000 fans; and the 1000 Meere video has been watched over 615 000 times on MSN.

They're not even twenty and they've already got shows like Bercy and the Parc Des Princes under their belts...

Really Impressive: "Tom Kaulitz" Graffitis from a French Artist! At the big open air concert in PDP in Paris, one French fan gave Tom a little bag with fan gifts. Tom immediately saw a picture in the bag: It was a graffiti by Kim Lan, which really impressed him! In Backstage everyone looked the graffiti and later they also found other works by Kim Lan in the Web.
