Rome (July 7) Yesterday, Tokio Hotel worked between sound checks, TV interviews and seeing the winners of the “meet & greet.” They didn’t see much of Rome, partly because at the Bernini Hotel in Piazza Barberini, in which they rented an entire floor, was besieged by 500 fans, whose clutches were hard to escape from. Some of them, who had arrived from Germany, had spent 280 euros just to rent a room. The scene is one from the 80s, like it was for Duran Duran: troops of clones, a network of gloves and socks, studs and piercings, giant posters; the adrenaline had accumulated in March, when the concert was planned but then canceled due to the singer’s health problems. Minors in delirium, hundreds of which had spent the night outside the hippodrome. Once inside, the lawn was divided in half: parents behind, the children in front. A large fraction had invaded the place for guests and the press (the security wasn’t able to stop it) and the stage was transformed into a stuffed-animal and bra graveyard.
The evening opened with fireworks. The Kaulitz brothers have made their triumphant entrance with glasses to “Break Away.” Bill in a red T-shirt, leather jacket, and mane; Tom with dreadlocks and cap, long white T-shirt down to his knees. Followed then by “Final Day,” “1000 Oceans,” “Live Every Second,” “Love is Dead,” and then the first German song “Wir sterben niemals aus” (there had been a petition to sing the songs in their original language, not in English) and “Scream.” On “Black” high flames arose, while a projection of a video of the band goes on.

A big celebration yesterday in the Italian capital, the German band enchanted the public with their famous songs.
Rome, 7 July – The Capannelle arena was colored with fireworks, the fans are impatient and scream with joy, we must be talking about Tokio Hotel. The concert in Rome yesterday was a big success, around 15,000 people attended and supported the German band. Hordes of girls, and some rare boys invaded the hall. The average age, without counting the parents, must be around 17. The teens, before the concert, had invaded the tribune which was reserved for the guests, hoping to retrieve a smile from their idols.
Tokio Hotel had spent the whole day in interviews and doing the sound check. The rest of the day was spent in their hotel, Bernini in Barberini, which was assaulted by 500 fans…some of them had come directly from Germany and paid almost 300 euros to have a room.
Tokio Hotel became famous during 2005 with their hit “Durch den Monsun,” which was a success in Germany, Poland, Austria, and Czech Republic, and then the rest of Europe. The single entered 15th place in the top 50 singles’ sales in less than 7 days. That same year in September, they released their first album, “Schrei.”

Last night, Sunday 7th of July, the well-awaited concert took place in Rome; the German rock band had cancelled the concert in March due to Bill’s health problems.
15,000 tickets were sold, but for the parents of the youngest fans, the hygiene and other conditions in which their children found themselves in weren’t very satisfying. “We arrived yesterday from Volterra (an Italian city) and we slept under tents,” said one father. “At 9, my daughter went in line. The organizers gave water to everyone: but the children waited there, without a drink. When they were able to have a gulp, it was scalding hot. They need to be more careful, they have to take care of some young ones (everyone younger than 18).”
“This is a hippodrome; I’m convinced horses are better treated than our children.” Declared one mother, while another one tells us about the entrance “It’s absurd, the tickets from March were made in sectors, which means there were several entrances, but now there’s only one! Today, in order to help those who slept here, the organizers gave numbers to guarantee priority to each of them, but that system didn’t work.”
The organizers of the concert defend themselves: “Already on Friday night there were teens who slept outsides.” Someone in charge said, “we were obliged to open the hall doors (for the toilets) and set up emergency toilets, and call people to give out 20,000 bottles of water. We did all we could.”

Outside the hippodrome, dozens of campers with whole families were there, supporting the passion of their children in order to win a place in the front rows.
Military personnel watered the masses with water cannons. Countermeasures were not enough to prevent many common illnesses in the heat: ambulances had intervened in dozens of cases. Shortly before 17:00, some people broke down barriers (injuries and fractures were reported in the security personnel) and crowds of girls were injured mildly.
In some cases, in a vain attempt to bring order, some police officers produced some regrettable incidents of mistreatment against adults and even children. “We had numbered tickets,” tells Silvia 13, in tears. “the organization had said we could use them for the concert, even though they wouldn’t secure seats. Instead we’re treated like beasts, and at one point, an agent allowed us to get on one of the staircases, but then another arrived at the top and blocked us. A policeman has pushed my father, and my friend Beatrice fell.”
When it was no long possible to restrain the flow of fans waiting to enter, following the breakthrough of the barriers, several thousand spectators managed to pass without any ticket controls. According to internal organization sources, approximately 7,000 people entered without purchasing any type of ticket. The organizers had underestimated the impact of Tokio Hotel’s public: predominantly between 12 and 16 years, their behavior (as some of the security noted) is different and less manageable than those of adult audiences.
The area, in fact, has no separate entrances, and is completely outdoors and difficult to control….
