Where did you grow up?
I was born in Leipzig, Germany, but I lived in Hanover ‘till my parents divorced when I was 6. After a while in Magdeburg, we went to live in a little village called Loitsche. That is where I grew up and where all my memories come from.
How did you live through your parents’ divorce ?
A divorce is never easy for kids. I talked about it in my song “Gegen meinen Willen.” We were just kids, Tom and I, and it was a painful experience. But there were no screams or tears. After, we were able to see our father without any problems. Not all kids of divorced parents have that chance.
What was life like in Loitsche?
Loitsche was not far from a forest. When we arrived, I was all young and happy to live surrounded by nature. Playing free in the woods, was the dream for a kid! But it became boring as we grew up. I was thirsty for discoveries and different things, but I was stuck in a small village. It was horrible! Luckily Magdebourg was 20 minutes away by bus, and so Tom and I took all the chances possible to go there.
What did you hate above all ?
School stayed my worst nightmare. I never felt in the right place, and I only thought of one thing: running away! And the teachers undoubtedly would have liked me to do so. It was hard for them to keep up with my personality.
Why was school so horrible ?
I couldn’t stand that people told me what to think and what to do. The fact to have to conform to certain rules, sometimes absurd ones, was very hard. For me, school was like prison! I had that feeling ever since the first few days of school.
Were you an insolent student ?
I often snapped back to my teachers. But I knew the rules of the game very well, and I knew how to stop myself. So you could say that I was insolent, but never insulting, in a way that they couldn’t kick me out (smiles). Otherwise, I had very good grades…in fact, since I wanted to get over with school as fast as possible, I made myself able to pass grades with success and not waste time.
How would you define your personality ?
It’s hard to say that I’m really…But, I think that the word “freedom” sums up the essence of my personality. I need to be able to give my opinion and to act freely, without feeling oppressed or constrained by social rules. I am an independent guy.
What inperfections of yours bother people most ?
People say I’m obstinate and a perfectionist. When there’s something I want to do, nothing can pull me back. I think that sometimes annoys my ‘entourage’ and the members of the band, in particular. They don’t understand why I stress all the little details.
Do you remember your first musical emotions ?
When I was little, my grandmother often went to shows and she brought me with her. I had my first burst of musical ‘emotion’ when I was 6, at one of Nena’s concerts, a German pop star. I announced to my mother that night, that I too wanted to become a singer!
On stage, how exactly do you feel ?
Before a concert, I’m in a complete nervous state. The first few minutes on stage are always very trying. I need in general 2 or 3 songs before I lose my nervousness. Then I enter a state of ecstasy that’s hard to describe. In Germany, we usually perform in halls with 15 000 people. Supported by such a public, very fast, you feel strong, powerful and almost invulnerable. When the fans start singing along, I get goose bumps. What more is there to say?
What touches you the most about your fans ?
I’m very impressed by the intensity of their feelings. They don’t do anything half-way and they manifest their emotions without holding them back. They know the songs by heart and are very excited to see us and want to know everything about us. I admire their enthusiasm and their fidelity.
What supernatural power would you like to have ?
I would like to be invisible! It must be fascinating to be able to appear and disappear whenever, and to go where you want without anyone seeing…
Do you keep secrets from your twin Tom ?
Tom knows absolutely everything about me. We tell each other everything; there is no secret between us. We are soul-mates, in the proper sense. If there are physical and character differences between us, we are still always the same.
Even far from him, do you know what he’s feeling ?
It may seems strange, but, yet, even through distance, I can guess what state of spirit Tom is in. It also happens that we have the same dreams at the same time! No scientists are able to disprove the emotional connection between twins. But it exists, I can testify to that.
Have you already gone out with the same girl as your brother ?
Tom and I had our first kiss with the same girl. I must say that in our village, there weren’t many pretty girls to kiss. If I can remember, she was the only cute girl in the whole place. We didn’t really have a choice.
What attracts you to a girl ?
I am very sensitive to the look. Yes, the girl’s look has to captivate me, and express something mysterious to be able to interest me. The rest, it’s secondary…
When’s the last time you did something with a girl?
It’s been a long time that I’ve had the occasion to flirt. My last relationship has stopped since 2 years. Since the release of our first album, the months have been flying by, at an incredible pace. I didn’t even see the time go by.
What would the fans be most surprised to learn about you?
The fans know some of my personality. In private, I’m actually a bit different. I even have a talent to tell funny stories and play comics.
